THE PRIEST AND THE VILLAGE: The historical trajectory of Father Pedro Balzi in Vila da Paz (Teresina 1986-2009)
History, Biography, Catholic Church, Teresina.
The present thesis aims to produce a historical biography of Father Pedro Balzi, the analysis produced about his historical trajectory referred to a part of his life. The sixty-year-old priest arrived at the occupation space in May 1987, the place of his last mission. To this end, the individual destiny of the priest is intertwined with the historical configuration of the Vila da Paz community, south of Teresina, capital of Piauí. With this I sought to understand how his actions, as a representative of the Catholic Church, promoted the transformation of this space, which was born from an occupation. I also tried to analyze how it was inserted in the sociopolitical context from the second half of the twentieth century, marked by intense mobilizations in the struggle for housing and how its actions carried out through liberation theology were important for the fixation of subjects in the community. Bibliographic and documentary research and interviews were used, hoping at the end of the research to understand the historical conditions that enabled the missionary priest to participate in the consolidation of part of the urban space of the city.
