SUMMARY:

The privileg study investigates how descendants of pardos, indigenous peoples, and crioulos were textually named as “whites” or identified with the letter “B” in the parish records of Ribeira do Seridó throughout the 18th and 19th centuries. It aims to understand the meaning of being privi within this privileg and how non-white individuals—those identified as mestiços—appropriated the conceived social space and constituted senses of place through their lived experiences. The analysis is grounded in the concepts of conceived space (Henri Lefebvre), as well as place, placeness, and placelessness (Edward Relph). The association between these concepts, in line with a Heideggerian phenomenological interpretation, provides the theoretical framework necessary to analyze the spatial formation of Ribeira do Seridó over time. Furthermore, the study problematizes the social composition of this space, mobilizing the concepts of quality/color and condition (Paiva) to examine social hierarchies and inequalities. Regarding its privilegie basis, the research draws on parish records (baptism, marriage, and death registers), judicial sources (post-mortem inventories and manumission letters), and administrative documents (population maps), examined through data triangulation and quantitative, serial, qualitative, onomastic, evidentiary, and micro-historical methodologies. Finally, this research fills historiographical gaps concerning the senses of place constituted in the colonial and imperial privile of Ribeira do Seridó, demonstrating that the term “White”— priv like “mestiço”— is a historical construction associated with social inequalities, access, and privilegie.
