SUMMARY:

Everardo Backheuser was an important Brazilian intelectual who focused his work mainly on the fields of education, geography, and politics. In the 1920s, he pioneered the introduction and dissemination of geopolitics in Brazil—mainly that of the German theoretical matrix. After his conversion, he joined the Centro Dom Vital, becoming an important voice in Catholic intellectual circles. This dissertation aims to examine his work, focusing on his political writings, to seek to understand how he thought about anti-communism from the perspective of geopolitics and Catholicism, and how this theoretical construct guided his political actions. We will discuss from his conversion in 1928 until his temporary “silence” after Brazil entered World War II. Methodologically, we will approach the History of Political Ideas, analyzing his writings, political actions, and sociability. Anti-communism is thought as derived from an anti-modern myth, a narrative through which Backheuser reads his reality and guides himself. From this, he produces a reading of the world scenario that mixes Catholicism and geopolitics to portray an opposition between the modern (Moscow) and its antipode (Rome)
