SUMMARY:

The objective is to analyze how the anti-leprosy policy was implemented in Rio Grande do Norte, starting with the construction and operation of isolationist medical centers, especially the São Francisco de Assis Leprosarium. I use 1934 as the initial timeframe, the year the National Plan to Combat Leprosy was launched, and 1962, the year when compulsory isolation of patients ceased to be a public health policy, as the final reference point. The National Plan to Combat Leprosy, the guiding document for leprosy control policy in Brazil, based its actions on the operation of a network of medical institutions called a tripod: leprosariums, a preventorium, and a dispensary. In Rio Grande do Norte, starting in 1936, this model was implemented with the expansion of the São Francisco de Assis Leprosarium, the construction of the Osvaldo Cruz School, and the operation of dispensaries throughout the state. Based on the leprosy control measures implemented, I argue that a specialized spatial complex for combating leprosy was created in Rio Grande do Norte. These spaces acquired different medical and architectural conceptions. In this work, isolationist medical spaces are understood as the result of a cultural narrative, practiced by different subjects: doctors, patients, and segments of society. These different groups signified and practiced medical spaces differently, developing medical practices and concepts of disease/health, and redefining their relationships with the medical space and with disease. To develop this research, I use as sources the official legislation for combating leprosy, articles circulated in the city's main newspapers and debates held at medical conferences, and clinical and epidemiological records held in the archives of the São Francisco de Assis Leprosarium.
