The Constitution of Presidente Joao Pessoa Avenue as a Space of Sociability and Memory in Cajazeiras - Paraiba (1936-1980)
Space of Sociability; Space of Memory; President João Pessoa Avenue; Cajazeiras.
This dissertation investigates how Presidente Joao Pessoa Avenue, located in the center of Cajazeiras, in the sertao region of Paraiba, was established as an important space of sociability and memory throughout the 20th century. This avenue was a reference point for gatherings, festivals, carnival parades, political rallies, and strolls, commonly frequented by individuals seeking leisure, entertainment, and social interactions, with the primary aim being the enjoyment of interaction itself. This type of relationship was described by sociologist Georg Simmel (2006) as sociability, an aspect of social organization and functioning that, as proposed by historian Maurice Agulhon (2016), is a fruitful historical subject. Joao Pessoa Avenue gained prominence from the early decades of the 20th century with the modernization of the city and the development of local commerce, becoming a space for consumption, occupied by cinemas, shops, bars, and other commercial establishments. However, over the final decades of the century, the avenue saw a decline in sociability practices, becoming known among the population as a space of memory and reminiscence (Assmann, 2015). The present study uses sources such as newspapers, memoirs, and oral testimonies to document the transformations the city of Cajazeiras underwent, as well as the reworking of the past through the memory, subjectivity, and experiences of individuals who lived there. We start from an understanding of space as an entity in transformation, a product of human practices, thoughts, and actions, constituting a symbol of the identity and collective memory of those who inhabit it.
