The Airbnbization Process and the Expansion of Tourism in the Interior of Northeastern Brazil

SUMMARY:

The recurring transformations in tourism restructure this social practice and economicactivity as productive restructurings occur around the capitalist mode of production, especially in thecontemporary scenario, in which platform capitalism is presented as a central element of analysis of diverse productive sectors. In this context, the articulation between tourism and platform capitalism has beenresulting in processes of political, sociocultural, environmental and, above all, spatial order in the globalscenario of tourist cities and/or tourism, having Airbnb as a material and symbolic illustration of thisprocess. At the same time, the local scale presents itself as a locus of analysis to understand how hostingplatforms, such as Airbnb, have been intensifying the process of touristification of the interior of theBrazilian Northeast. From this perspective, the main objective of the research was to analyze the airpollution process in medium and small tourist municipalities of the interior of the Brazilian Northeast,considering how global processes are articulated with local tourism. The methodology adopted was aqualitative-quantitative approach, of an exploratory nature, based on a study of multiple cases(Guaramiranga, Ceará; Gravatá, Pernambuco; and Lençóis, Bahia). Data collection involved bibliographicresearch, documentary research (with secondary data survey) and field research (with primary data survey)through the application of semi-structured interviews (in person and online), non-participant observation,field journals and photographic records. The results indicate that, while on a global scale, Airbnb has beensubject to increasing attempts at regulation, in Brazil this debate is still incipient, predominating theperception of the platform as an instrument for strengthening tourist activity and boosting local economies.In addition, although the municipalities analyzed lack official information on tourist demand, flow andconsumption, the Airbnb indicators corroborated the understanding that the air-listing process intensifiesthe turistification of these territories. In this perspective, some research agendas have the potential todeepen the understanding of airbnbization in medium and small tourist municipalities, highlighting studieson regulation and governance of Airbnb, the actions of the State, the strategies of the traditionalaccommodation sector, the socioeconomic profile of the hosts and the impacts of the expansion of theplatform on the real estate market. Therefore, it is confirmed that the platform redefines and intensifies thetourist territory in the interior of the Brazilian Northeast.
