SUMMARY:

The consolidation of tourism as a strategic activity for territorial development has expanded the role of thepublic sector in the formulation, planning, and management of public tourism policies, requiringprofessionals with specific training and appropriate technical competencies. In this context, the insertionand performance of the tourism professional in public tourism management become fundamental toensuring the quality and efficiency of governmental actions and the sustainable development of tourism.Given this scenario, this study aims to analyze the performance of the tourism professional in publictourism management in the state of Rio Grande do Norte, focusing on academic training, professionalcompetencies, and the tourism labor market. The theoretical framework is based on literature addressinghigher education in tourism, the competencies of tourism professionals, the tourism labor market, andpublic management as a field of professional practice for the turismólogo. Methodologically, the researchadopts a qualitative approach with an exploratory and descriptive character. The data collection proceduresincluded documentary analysis of four pedagogical projects of undergraduate tourism programs at thestate’s public universities (UFRN and UERN); analysis of public service examination notices for theposition of tourism professional over the last ten years in the state; the application of questionnaires to 169municipal and state public tourism agencies, including agencies from all 167 municipalities of Rio Grandedo Norte and two state tourism agencies; and the conduction of 15 interviews with tourism professionalsworking in public tourism management at municipal and state levels. After analyzing all collected data,the results made it possible to identify the relationship between the competencies developed duringacademic training, those required by the public sector, and those effectively exercised by tourismprofessionals, among other aspects. The findings contribute to a better understanding of the role of thisprofessional in public management in Rio Grande do Norte and encourage reflections, debates, and furtherstudies on the insertion and performance of tourism professionals in public tourism management.
