SUMMARY:

This thesis investigates how geotourism risk management can inform planning for tourist destinations and attractions in natural areas. The central problem lies in recognizing that such areas, characterized by high geodynamic sensitivity, produce complex risks that remain underrepresented in the literature on disaster risk management. The research is justified by the need to consolidate a concept of risks specifically applied to tourism and to propose theoretical and methodological frameworks capable of guiding management from the perspective of disaster risk reduction in tourism. It is argued that existing conceptual frameworks, while important and fundamental, are insufficient because they fail to address the structural complexity of the tourism system. The concept of geotourism risk proposed in this study differs from traditional approaches by integrating the vulnerability of the infrastructures defined in SISTUR (tourism, basic, and support) and the risk perception of multiple tourism stakeholders (tourists, local communities, operators, experts, and public administrators) regarding the hazards present in the territories. The objective of this thesis is to propose guidelines for managing geotourism risks, characterizing them based on the unique characteristics of tourism in natural areas and consolidating a robust tool to support management decisions aimed at the resilient planning of tourist destinations and attractions. To this end, a qualitative and exploratory methodological approach is adopted, which conceives of tourism as a dynamic system. The research combines bibliographical and documentary research, and participatory methodologies for critical analysis of concepts, policies, models, and standards, combined with content analysis of national and international technical documents. As a result, the thesis offers conceptual and methodological frameworks capable of supporting a set of actions for managers to plan integrated tourism management in natural areas in response to geotourism risks, directly contributing to strengthening tourism resilience, territorial sustainability, and a culture of disaster prevention within the activity. To validate and demonstrate their applicability, the guidelines will be tested in the context of the Seridó UNESCO Global Geopark, with potential for replication in other destinations or tourist attractions in natural areas that address geotourism risks.
