The role of Geoparks in the local development process: a study based on the Seridó Aspiring Geopark
Geoparks. Local development. Aspiring Geopark Seridó.
The aim of the present study is to analyze how the Seridó Aspiring Geopark has been contributing to the local development of Seridó potiguar. Specific objectives, based on the territory of the Seridó Aspiring Geopark, are: a) to identify activities carried out by the local community; b) verify the performance of local tourist companies; and c) to identify conservation actions in geosites. The study is characterized as descriptive, with a qualitative approach, and the research strategy used relates to the case study. For data collection, Carvalho's methodology (2013) was chosen, which is based on the three pillars of a geopark (conservation, education and geotourism). The data collection instrument is the interview, in which several local actors who perform activities related to the territory of the aspiring geopark will be interviewed. The theoretical foundations addressed concern the following themes: geoparks, geotourism, sustainable and local development, and Seridó potiguar. As parcial results, it was identified, those focused on the issues of conservation of geosites. Some actions aimed at protecting the geological heritage were implemented, such as, for example, municipal laws, wooden walkways for the protection of rock paintings in archaeological sites, signage for environmental education and maintenance of structures in some geosites, and an event with the theme of conservation of the environment. Vandalism practices were also identified, which requires greater attention and preventive and corrective actions on these acts to ensure the protection of geosites.
