Refresher Course on the Prevention and Management of Complications Related to Intestinal Stomas for Primary Health Care Nursing Professionals.
Training Courses; Ostomy; Primary Health Care; Education, Nursing; Validation Study.
Introduction: Nursing care for people with intestinal stomas is essential for rehabilitation and
quality of life; however, there are gaps in care associated with insufficient training and low
technical-scientific skills among nursing professionals. These weaknesses compromise
adherence to treatment, autonomy, and self-care, requiring professionals to have mastery of
knowledge for the prevention and management of complications associated with intestinal
stomas.
Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of a continuing education course aimed at primary
health care nursing professionals in the prevention and management of complications related
to intestinal stomas.
Method: (1) development of two scoping reviews, according to the Joanna Briggs Institute
methodology and PRISMA-ScR guidelines, on postoperative complications associated with
intestinal stomas (prolapse, hernia, retraction, peristomal dermatitis, necrosis, and
mucocutaneous detachment); (2) The methodological study is subdivided into two stages:
Stage I will involve the construction of content for a refresher course (20 hours) for nursing
professionals working in primary health care. This construction will include the following
steps: a) Grouping of studies, protocols, guides, clinical guidelines, congress proceedings,
expert consensus from the Brazilian Association of Enterostomal Therapy, Wound, Ostomy,
and Continence Nurses Society, World Council of Enterostomal Therapists, European Wound
Management Association, Nurses Specialized in Wound, Ostomy and Continence Canada and
other similar institutions; b) Systematization of the findings obtained through the scoping
reviews, as well as the references that supported the construction of these reviews; c)
Selection and distribution of nursing care in three stages (pre-, trans- and post-operative) and
in two dimensions: prevention and clinical management; d) Development of the syllabus and
plan of the refresher course. The second stage will consist of content validation of the
refresher course, which will be carried out by seven judges, using the Delphi technique and an
agreement index between judges ≥0.80; (3). Quasi-experimental study that will contemplate
the implementation of the refresher course, organized into five modules, for primary health
care nursing professionals, with the stages of pre-test (T0), post-test (T1) and retention (2).
The study will be submitted to appraisal by the Research Ethics Committee of the Federal
University of Rio Grande do Norte and data collection will only begin after approval by the
committee. The ethical precepts established by resolutions No. 466, of December 12, 2012
and No. 510, of April 7, 2016, both from the National Health Council, will be followed.
