SUMMARY:

Introduction: Syphilis is a potentially serious, but curable, systemic sexually transmitted infection caused by the bacterium Treponema pallidum and treatable with appropriate antibiotic therapy. It stands out for its high potential for vertical transmission, constituting an important public health problem due to its association with adverse maternal and infant outcomes, such as congenital
syphilis. In the context of pregnancy, infection can result in serious consequences, including fetal and neonatal deaths—estimated at around 300,000 cases annually worldwide—as well as exposing approximately 200,000 children to an increased risk of prematurity, miscarriage, and congenital manifestations, often accompanied by significant sequelae for child development. Given this context, the following research question emerges: what are the social representations of the diagnosis of gestational syphilis among women assisted in primary care?

Objectives: the general objective is to understand the social representations of the diagnosis of gestational syphilis among women assisted in primary care, and the specific objective is to analyze
the meanings attributed to the diagnosis of gestational syphilis by women, considering their experiences in the context of primary care.

Method: This is a qualitative study, anchored in the assumptions of the Theoretical Paradigm of
Social Representations, in its structural aspect, to be carried out with pregnant and lactating women who have experienced gestational syphilis in the context of primary care in a municipality in the interior of Pernambuco. Data collection will utilize a research instrument composed of a sociodemographic questionnaire, a semi-structured interview using the free word association technique, associated with the substitution and decontextualization model (silent zone), with the inducing term "being pregnant/mother with a diagnosis of syphilis," and a drawing-story with the theme. The data will be analyzed through prototypical processing (four-cell table) for each matrix, for which intermediate frequencies and average orders of evocations will be automatically calculated according to the requirements. Central nuclei, peripheries, and contrast zones will thus be composed. The composition and co-occurrence test of words (similarity analysis) will be carried out. The analytical processing will be done using the software Interface de R pour les Analyses Multidimensionnelles deTextes et de Questionnaires (IRAMUTEQ), version 0.7 alpha 2. The research will be submitted for approval by the Research Ethics Committee of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte.

Final Considerations: It is expected that this study will contribute to the understanding of the social representations of the diagnosis of gestational syphilis elaborated by women in the context of primary care, highlighting the meanings, feelings and repercussions associated with this experience. By shedding light on such constructions, anchored in the framework of Serge Moscovici's Social Representations, the research may support the improvement of care practices, especially regarding the welcoming approach, the strengthening of the bond and communication between health professionals and pregnant women. Furthermore, the findings have the potential to guide strategies that are more sensitive to the subjective dimensions of the health-disease process, contributing to the reduction of adverse outcomes related to gestational syphilis and to the improvement of health actions within the scope of primary care.
