SUMMARY:

Wage remuneration permeates several dimensions of an individual’s life, promoting well-being, recognition, and financial security. However, noticeable salary disparities persist among workers, particularly within the nursing profession, which may contribute to professional migration, illness, and dissatisfaction with the career. Therefore, research on this topic is essential to promote wage equity, improve working conditions, and support the development of public policies aimed at valuing nursing professionals. This study aimed to analyze the salary trends of nursing workers in Brazil between 2003 and 2023, considering the evolution of salary ranges over time. It is an analytical-descriptive and exploratory study with a quantitative approach, adopting an ecological time-trend design focused on the wage trajectory of the nursing workforce across Brazil’s five regions. Data were obtained from the publicly accessible Annual Social Information Report (RAIS), encompassing nurses, nursing technicians, and nursing assistants. The dependent variable was “Average Remuneration,” and the independent variable was the study period. Data extraction, processing, and analysis
were conducted using R® software and complemented in Microsoft Excel®, applying descriptive statistics, moving average technique, first-order differencing, and the Mann-Kendall-Sen test to identify temporal trends. The study complied with the ethical principles of Resolution No. 466/2012 of the National Health Council (CNS) and was approved by the Research Ethics Committee of UFRN (Approval No. 6.289.051 / CAAE 26519519.5.0000.5537). Between 2003 and 2023, salary ranges attributed to nursing professionals in Brazil showed relative stability, with little variation in the number of workers within each range over time, indicating the persistence of a historical remuneration pattern. The time-trend analysis revealed real growth in earnings, although uneven across regions and professional categories, reflecting persistent structural disparities. The implementation of the national nursing minimum wage in 2022 impacted the composition of salary ranges, particularly among nursing technicians and assistants, resulting in an upward adjustment of the lowest wages. However, this wage policy does not account for regional differences in living costs and economic structures, limiting its overall effectiveness in ensuring equitable professional valorization. The projection based on the historical series indicated that salary ranges close to the national minimum wage tend to maintain an upward trajectory, while higher salary ranges show a downward trend across both occupational classes. Overall, the evolution and salary trends of the nursing workforce in Brazil from 2003 to 2023 demonstrate
gradual progress and positive effects following the implementation of the national wage floor, yet reveal the persistence of inequalities and the ongoing need for broader policies to promote wage equity and sustainable professional appreciation.
