SUMMARY:

Introduction: Mental health challenges characterize the reality of homeless individuals, who
face high rates of mental disorders, exceeding those of the general population. Health care,
often limited to assistance-based and problem-focused care, hinders a transformative
approach and perpetuates the cycle of exclusion. In this context, mental health recovery
emerges as a promising approach, understood as a personal journey of overcoming
difficulties that goes beyond symptom remission toward a purposeful life. Objective: To
develop a situation-specific theory for the recovery process of homeless individuals, based
on the Tidal Model. Method: This research is theoretically exploratory in nature with a
qualitative approach, grounded in the methodological frameworks of the integrative approach
of Im and Walker and Avant. The process will be organized in four stages. The first,
verification of assumptions, will consist of a reflective and contextual analysis of nursing care
for this population. The second, exploration of the phenomenon, will consist of an analysis of
the concept of recovery and field research with Thematic Oral History. The third stage,
theorizing, will be subdivided into three phases: 1) initiation, based on the theoretical
derivation of the Tidal Model; 2) process, with the synthesis that articulates knowledge from
multiple sources; 3) integration, with consolidation of the analysis and modeling of the
theory. The fourth stage, reporting, sharing, and validation, will be developed based on the
documentation of the theory for peer review and validation. Expected outcomes: The
development of a theoretical framework that functions as a soft-hard technology is expected,
offering a practical framework for improving mental health nursing care, strengthening the
role of homeless individuals in their recovery process.
