SUMMARY:

The postpartum period is marked by physical, hormonal, emotional, and social changes,
often exacerbated by neonatal hospitalization. Even in rooming-in at the Conventional
Kangaroo Neonatal Intermediate Care Unit, the technologically advanced routine and
constant surveillance can generate fear, insecurity, frustration, and loneliness.
Postpartum anxiety is prevalent, ranging from 15% to 25% in the first weeks and
reaching 40% with neonatal hospitalization. Considering the need for safe and
accessible non-pharmacological strategies, Integrative and Complementary Health
Practices, especially low-level laser auriculotherapy, show promise for managing
maternal anxiety. This study aims to evaluate the effect of laser auriculotherapy on
reducing anxiety in postpartum women with newborns admitted to the Kangaroo
Intensive Care Unit (NICU). This is a randomized, quantitative clinical trial conducted
at the Januário Cicco Maternity School in Natal, Rio Grande do Norte. Fifty-two
postpartum women will be randomly assigned to an Intervention Group (active laser)
and a Control Group (simulated laser). Each participant will receive four sessions over
two weeks, targeting the Anxiety, Shen Men, Heart, Kidney, and Sympathetic Nervous
System points, according to a validated protocol. Anxiety will be measured using the
State-Trait Anxiety Inventory at three different time points, allowing for intra- and
intergroup analyses. Laser auriculotherapy is expected to significantly reduce anxiety
levels and support its incorporation as a complementary practice in nursing care.
