SUMMARY:

Introduction: The advancing landscape of scientific development has facilitated various human experiences through technological means, with Virtual Reality (VR) standing out as one such resource. VR is renowned for its capacity to promote neuroplasticity, serving as a complementary tool in conventional physiotherapy. Immersive VR, characterized by complete immersion in virtual environments, may induce diverse side effects among users. These discomforts, collectively termed Cybersickness (CS), manifest in symptoms such as headaches, dizziness, nausea, and disorientation. Objective: This study aims to assess the viability of a serious immersive VR game, VIRTUALTER, for postural balance rehabilitation and to investigate Cybersickness symptoms in healthy young individuals. Methodology: An experimental study employing intentional non-probabilistic sampling will be conducted. Pre- and post-immersion assessments will be administered to 50 young and healthy participants utilizing Virtualter's immersive VR mode via Oculus Meta Quest 2. Assessment tools will include a sociodemographic questionnaire, the Motion Sickness Susceptibility Questionnaire (MSSQ), the Simulator Sickness Questionnaire (SSQ), the Presence Questionnaire (QP), the Intrinsic Motivation Inventory (IMI), and vital sign monitoring. The project will be conducted at the Virtual Reality Intervention and Research Laboratory (LIPERV) within the Department of Physiotherapy, in collaboration with the Laboratory of Educational, Assistive, and Multimedia Technologies (TEAM) at the School of Science and Technology, Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN). Statistical Analysis: Quantitative data will be tabulated and analyzed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 22.0. Regarding Cybersickness symptom investigation, the Shapiro-Wilk normality test will be performed, and depending on data distribution, the T Test for independent samples and Chi-square test will be applied to compare sociodemographic and clinical variables. Preliminary Results: Currently, professionals from TEAM specializing in science, technology, and game development are refining the game based on evaluations and feedback received during the initial validation stage of VIRTUALTER in immersive mode.
