SUMMARY:

The purpose of this study is to examine the productive spatial circuit of cassava products and how it has evolved in recent years. In the current context, cassava and its products rank among the ten most widely consumed foods in the world, particularly in developing countries. The hypothesis of this research is that the industrialization of cassava products has altered the stages of production, distribution and consumption, creating a plurality of spatial interactions, flows whose composition, intensity and strength vary according to the capital invested, the organization of the preexisting space, and the political landscape, and has redefined the agricultural use of the territory. The work was conducted through a literature review, including consultations with EMBRAPA and CEPEA; through online research, such as on the ABAM website; and through newspaper articles. Secondary data collection has been carried out by compiling a database of information gathered from the websites of IBGE, FIERN, CEPEA, and RAIS/CAGED. Primary data were collected through field visits conducted in Paraná and Rio Grande do Norte. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with entrepreneurs from cassava-processing agro-industries in Paraná, from a cassava flour mill in Rio Grande do Norte, and with a technical advisor from SEBRAE in Rio Grande do Norte. In addition, field visits were undertaken and a photographic archive was compiled in major supermarket chains. The findings conclude that the industrialization of cassava products has been massively concentrated in the subspace corresponding to Brazil’s Concentrated Region, particularly in Paraná. The industries located in the region have been industrializing and supplying foods to national and international markets that were previously produced locally and artisanally, such as the cassava starch produced by flour mills in Rio Grande do Norte. The concentrated location of cassava derivative production gave rise to a specialized region in the Northwest part of the state of Paraná, establishing the city of Paranavaí as an agricultural city. Meanwhile, the subspaces of the Brazilian territory, for instance Rio Grande do Norte, maintain geographical situations of production, distribution, and consumption shaped by relations of continuity and complementarity.
