SUMMARY:

This research examines the territorial dynamics and forms of land use resulting from the presence of contemporary slavery in Northeast Brazil, with the aim of revealing its spatial distribution and the socioeconomic context in which it occurs. The study, therefore, interprets this phenomenon in light of the global process of economic, cultural, and political integration and restructuring, as well as new patterns of modernization in rural and urban areas. It is able to aggregate the picture of strong injustices and socio-spatial inequalities arising from a socioeconomic structure that, despite being diverse, coexists amid situations of labor overexploitation and debt slavery. The guiding question of the research is: what territorial factors explain the spatial distribution of contemporary slavery in Northeast Brazil during the late 20th and early 21st centuries, and its association with the expansion of agribusiness in rural areas? From this perspective, the overall objective is to understand the territorial factors that explain the spatial distribution of contemporary slavery in Northeast Brazil during the late 20th and early 21st centuries, and its association with the expansion of agribusiness in rural areas. The hypothesis is that, even in the context of the 20th and 21st centuries, with greater technological capacity for the production and distribution of goods and services, Brazil still lives with an agrarian structure that reinforces the processes of depletion of natural resources and the submission of people to the humiliating condition of servitude. The methodology adopted is based on a multiscale geographical approach, anchored in the concept of space production and the theoretical-methodological conception of space-time inseparability. Procedures such as bibliographic and documentary research, secondary data analysis (statistical and spatial), and cartographic and statistical elaboration were used. The results achieved so far show a significant concentration of cases of contemporary slavery or debt bondage (also) in areas of agribusiness expansion, such as the MATOPIBA region, reaffirming the persistence of inequalities and injustices in the production process in this area.
