DESERTIFICATION PROCESS IN THE PIRANHAS-AÇU WATER BASIN, RIO GRANDE DO NORTE, BRAZIL
Areas susceptible to desertification; Landscape; Indicators of desertification; Seridó region of Rio Grande do Norte.
The research analyzes desertification as a socio-environmental phenomenon of dryland degradation resulting from the interaction between natural and human factors. From a geographical perspective, it focuses on the spatial understanding and landscape dynamics of the Piranhas-Açu River Basin (BHPA) in its territorial extension in the state of Rio Grande do Norte. To this end, the study takes as its starting point the mapping of heavily degraded areas (CGGE, 2016) and part of the central approach of evaluating the process through indicators, with a view to raising discussions inherent to the geographical principles of investigation: location and extension. Thus, the overall objective is to analyze the levels and spatial configuration of the desertification process in the BHPA. Methodologically, the research is based on a geosystemic and multiscale approach, taking the hydrographic basin as the initial spatial unit of analysis and, at a later stage, the Areas Undergoing Desertification (APD) within it as categories for further analysis. The study combines a theoretical and conceptual review, analysis of geo-environmental constraints, collection and systematization of secondary data, mapping, and on-site verification, guiding the construction and application of a methodological matrix on desertification. The partial results show the different levels of susceptibility of the Piranhas-Açu basin, considering the geo-environmental predisposition interpreted by five geobiophysical indicators. The preliminary spatial analysis, substantiating previous studies (Vasconcelos Sobrinho, 1978; CGGE, 2016) and fieldwork carried out in the area, indicates that the heavily degraded areas of the basin may constitute the expansion of the Seridó Desertification Nucleus with spatialization of core areas, given the nature of the phenomenon - a hypothesis that guides the subsequent stages of the research. Thus, the adoption of a system of indicators, adjusted to the local geo-environmental reality, constitutes a promising methodological path for refining the diagnosis of desertification in the basin, contributing to the updating of the process for Rio Grande do Norte and to the strengthening of public policies to combat the phenomenon and mitigate its effects.
