SUMMARY:

This research seeks to analyze the relationships between regionalism and the folklorization of the backlands in the thought of Manuel Diégues Júnior (1912-1991). As a folklorist intellectual, Manuel Diégues Júnior acted as a cultural mediator when studying the society of Northeast Brazil, proposing anthropological and folkloric discussions centered on Northeastern regionalism and backlands life. Specifically, we engage with the ideas and networks of sociability in which this intellectual was embedded to verify his social position in intellectual production and how he elaborated a definition of "backlands" through folkloric knowledge. Although focusing on the regional dimension and the sugar-producing society, Manuel Diégues Júnior also wrote about the backlands and their most recurring themes – such as droughts, banditry, and folk songs – between the 1940s and 1950s. From the perspective of intellectual history, we seek to understand his conception of "backlands" and backwoodsman, based on the regionalist and folkloric matrix of his discourse. As sources, we used books and articles published by Manuel Diégues Júnior in newspapers and magazines available in the Digital Newspaper Archives of the National Library (BN) and the National Center for Folklore and Popular Culture (CNFCP). In these writings, we analyzed the records of the sociocultural and folkloric manifestations of the backlands, which he called the Mediterranean Northeast. As a methodological framework, this material will be examined using discourse analysis as theorized by Michel Foucault (1999; 2008) to address backwoods spaces as products of sociocultural practices. From a theoretical perspective, we make use of the discussions of Jean-François Sirinelli (1998; 2003), Angela de Castro Gomes and Patrícia Santos Hansen (2016), Durval Muniz de Albuquerque Júnior (2011; 2013; 2016) and Antonio Carlos Robert Moraes (2003), using, respectively, the concepts of intellectuals, mediating intellectuals, region, folklore and backlands to treat Manuel Diégues Júnior as an intellectual producer of cultural mediation around discourses about the backlands, defining backlands life as an element that underlies the folkloric knowledge of the Brazilian Northeast in the mid-20th century.
