The Graduate Program in History, with an area of concentration in the History of the Backlands, is the first academic master's program of Seridó Higher Education Center (CERES) of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte. Based at the Caicó Campus, in the city of Caicó, in the backlands of the Seridó region, it is the first and only graduate program in Brazil dedicated exclusively to the study of the History of the Backlands (Sertões). The Sertões, as an Area of Concentration, is justified as a distinct field of enunciation that dates back to a long tradition. Therefore, despite being directly associated with the dimension of spatiality, the Backlands (Sertão) refers to a very specific notion of space: the other, the opposition to the coast, the shore, the unknown. On the other hand, the constitution of a field of knowledge that proposes to investigate this spatiality, with its multifaceted historical and discursive dimensions, is justified by the very historicity of the concept of sertão (backlands), based on a broad lexicon in which the notions/concepts have been addressed by different writings and appear as defining the location of numerous richly collected/compiled traces referring to the Amerindian and Luso-Afro-Brazilian historical experience, allowing, from recent historiographical perspectives, to become a support for a broad production of historical knowledge. The area of concentration in question unfolds into two lines of research: Material culture, society and power in the backlands; and Historiography and Representations of the Backlands.
