SUMMARY:

This research analyzes the catechization process of the French Capuchin Friar Martinho de Nantes in the context of the 17th century, focusing on his work in two Kariri ethnic villages, Aracapá and Cavalo, in the middle São Francisco region, in the captaincy of Pernambuco, located in what is now the city of Orocó/PE. Part of the analysis involves examining a specific case with the intention of understanding the nuances of the colonial project regarding catechesis, the spaces of the villages, and the descriptions that the missionary emphasizes about the habits and customs of the populations he worked with. It draws on Cristina Pompa's concept of cultural translation to observe the histories constructed from the relationship between missionaries and indigenous peoples; and Michel de Certeau's concept of a 'scriptural economy' to support the understanding of the narrative that Martinho de Nantes constructs about the backlands' spatiality, expanding the analysis to the idea of the 'backlands as the target of a colonial project,' due to the conflicts Due to the conflicts involving sesmeiros, missionaries, and indigenous people during Colonial Brazil, and Michel de Certeau's concept of the “unsaid,” which will help to examine indigenous protagonism, resistance, and active participation of these populations that shaped the colonial project, but are woven into the narratives of Martinho de Nantes, overshadowed by a Eurocentric and religious description. It uses the concept of the “sertão” based on Robert Moraes (2003) to study its construction in the source. The documentary corpus consists of the work of the Capuchin himself: *Relação sucinta e sincera da missão do padre Martinho de Nantes, pregador capuchinho, missionário apostólico no Brasil entre os índios chamados cariri, 1685*, other missionary writings, and legislative sources from the period.
