“THE FLOWER OF THE SERTÕES OF SERIDÓ: FLORÂNIA/RN — VILLAGE, CITY, AND REPRESENTATIONS (1936–1943)”
Emancipation; Flores Village; City; Sertões; Toponymy, Representations.
This dissertation aims primarily to analyze the process of emancipation of the Vila de Flores, located in the central mesoregion of Rio Grande do Norte and in the Serra de Santana microregion, in the state of Rio Grande do Norte, to the status of a city, between the years 1936 and 1943 – a period during which the city changed its name to Florânia. In this investigation, we selected three important points for our study, namely: (1) to analyze the process of changing the city's political-legal status from a village to a municipality, (2) to examine the historical context that encompassed the city's toponymic change in 1943, and (3) to identify the ramifi cations of political emancipation on the urban organization of the city. The methodology of this investigation is based on a literature review covering works that mention the municipality of Florânia, namely: the books “Nomes da Terra” (1968) and “História do Rio Grande do Norte” (1955), both authored by Câmara Cascudo, “Denominação dos municípios” (1922) by Manuel Dantas, "Municípi. “Empires of Rio Grande do Norte” (1942) by Nestor Lima. These works are essential for understanding how memorialist historiography presents the case of Florânia in the fi rst half of the twentieth century. In addition to these books, other sources were consulted, such as: Decrees-Laws of the State of Rio Grande do Norte, texts in journals of the Historical and Geographic Institute of RN, as well as academic works related to the subject, photos of the city from the 1920s to the 1940s, and also, we used the 1937 Municipal Code of Postures, analyzing how urban planning was conceived with priority given to the organization and cleaning of streets and the maintenance/repair of the municipality's roads, among others. After reviewing the bibliography, we applied discourse analysis. All listed documents were analyzed considering the context in which they were produced and seeking the intentionality behind their creation.
