SUMMARY:

The purpose of this study is to analyze, from the perspective of space history, the construction project of the Ministro João Alves Filho Dam, known as the Boqueirão Dam, in the municipality of Parelhas/RN, from 1980 to 1988. When we reflecting on Parelhas, one must consider the conceptualization of the project from the early 20th century, as well as its revival in the 1980s, in the context of Brazil’s re-democratization and the reinstatement of a multiparty system. When reflecting on Parelhas, we consider it a place of passage, emerging near the Seridó River and marked by continuous crossings and possibilities of “progress” for the Seridó hinterland. In addition, we analyze the municipality in the 1980s, which had several water reservoirs. Even so, the population suffered from constant water shortages. In this context, the first groups of political blocs emerged, aligned with state interests, competing for the construction of the Boqueirão Dam and claiming authorship of the project. Moreover, we examine the “redeeming” propaganda of the time, influenced by ideals of progress and modernity, which advocated the perennialization of the Seridó River through the Boqueirão Dam and affirmed the usefulness of this reservoir for the development of the Seridó Potiguar region in all aspects. Thus, the objective here is to investigate the impact of the Boqueirão Dam on the Society of Parelhas, from the “dream” of salvation to the “sertanejos”, until the construction techniques of the dam, to expropriation of residents in the region and consequently the expansion of the urban nucleus of the city.
