This paper seeks to examine how a history of the backlands of Seridó is produced from the
university and, to help us achieve our objective, we have launched a new concept that we call
university backlands, a concept that emerged from a historiographical analysis of the works
written by historian Muirakytan Kennedy de Macêdo, A penúltima versão do Seridó – espaço
e história no regionalismo seridoense and Rústicos cabedais: Patrimônio e cotidiano familiar
nos sertões do Seridó (Séc. XVIII). The works mentioned above will delimit the time frame
defined for the research, which includes the years 1999 and 2007, the years in which the works
were published. It is worth noting that, because our sources are historiographical productions
constructed by a historian, our work is situated as a dimension of the production of historical
knowledge. The research deals with the perspective of a person from Seridó on the backlands
of Seridó, and brings with it a vision of this space that starts from himself. Throughout the
chapters, you will be presented with a critical work on the possibilities and limits of writing the
history of the backlands in the university environment. The work is divided into three chapters.
The first chapter is a critical and in-depth analysis of Muirakytan K. de Macêdo's master's
dissertation, The penultimate version of Seridó – space and history in regionalism in the Serido
region. The second chapter contains a critical analysis focused on Muirakytan K. de Macêdo's
doctoral thesis, Rústicos cabedais: Patrimônio e cotidiano familiar nos sertões do Seridó (Séc.
XVIII). And finally, the third chapter opens the reflection on the changes that occurred between
The penultimate version of Seridó and Rústicos cabedais.
