SUMMARY:

Sertao is a word and a concept, with many lexicons and meanings, which make them plural and vast. These meanings can be evidenced by academic writing on History as well as by erudite writing, varying the uses that were made to produce versions of history and sertoes. In historical narratives, for example, it is possible to evidence the presence of subjects who were in a certain time, society and cultural universe to use specific methodologies to produce a version of sertao, as a category or concept. In the 19th century, for example, in order to think of the Brazilian nation as a unit, it was necessary to refine the concept of sertao, which was taken as a conceptual object by Varnhagen and Capistrano de Abreu to conclude the project of nationality. (AMADO, p. 146, 1997). Creating meanings and versions in historical time based on uses is something common and that carries with it a layer of historicity, an interpretation of a time thinking about its other, its past. In this way, we can also reflect on these layers of interpretation and discuss the uses of concepts that fill historical time with meanings and versions. In this way, we take the writing of the erudite historian Wilson Seixas as the object of analysis, inspired by the intention of analyzing some of his works, namely: “Journey through the Province of Parayba” (1985), “Paraiba in the 500 years of Brazil” (2000) and two editions of “O Velho Arraia de Piranhas (Pombal): no centenario de sua eleicoes a cidade” (2004), to highlight the versions of the backlands constructed by the author. These are his main works, and he is considered by Evandro da Nobrega (2012) as an excellent researcher on the subject of the backlands. Given its relevance, we will start from Michel de Certeau's historiographical operation and Reihart Koselleck's history of concepts (2006) to study his social place, historiographical practice, writing, and the meanings of history and sertao that are given to be read in his works. Furthermore, we will look for the encounters of his writing with the IHGP project as well as the historicity or historical time of the works. We will try to discover such questions through readings of the materials and through theoretical reflection on the history of historiography, to finally delve into the discussions that permeate the writing of history and the uses that fabricate versions of sertao in historical time.
