SUMMARY:

In this research, we aim to investigate the experiences of youth in the Paraiba hinterland and their resistance during the Brazilian Military Dictatorship, a period marked by repression and the curtailment of civil liberties. Our approach will be based on a careful analysis of documentary, oral and audiovisual sources, which will allow us to understand the complexity of the experiences and struggles of these young people. The documentary sources include a variety of materials, such as official documents, correspondence and other records, all organized in Ubiratan Cortez Costa's personal archive. These documents not only reveal the institutional history of the time, but also reflect the voices and concerns of young people who experienced the repression. A critical analysis of these sources will allow us to draw up a panorama of the students' actions and reactions to the dictatorship and the coronelism that prevailed in society at the time. Oral sources, in turn, are a vital tool for revisiting and enriching the arguments found in Ubiratan Costa's archive, which is considered our main source. Interviews and testimonies from people who lived/studied this period will help us reveal new narratives and perspectives on the experiences of the sertanejo youth. This approach not only broadens our understanding of individual experiences, but also sheds light on the collective dynamics of resistance. In addition, when exploring the audiovisual content of the documentary “Praca de Guerra”, our analysis will focus on the information about the group of students who moved the small town in the Paraiba hinterland. This documentary offers an in-depth look at the role of these young people in socio-cultural projects during a time of intense repression. Through it, we seek to understand how the youth organized themselves, what strategies they adopted to fight the oppressive regime and how these efforts influenced local culture and identity. Our aim is to elucidate not only the formation of the groups that opposed the dictatorship, but also to understand how the hinterland of Paraiba became a significant space for the construction of collective identities and resistance. We will analyze how the culture and traditions of the hinterland shaped the experiences of struggle and how these memories were preserved and reinterpreted over time. In this way, we intend to contribute to a richer and more multifaceted understanding of the history of youth in the sertao, highlighting the importance of their resistance and their concerns about the formation of contemporary society.
