SUMMARY:

New techniques have been developed using devices for maxillomandibular record and/or facial scanning to optimize the fabrication of complete dentures (CDs). However, there is still a gap in the literature regarding clinical studies evaluating these methods. Therefore, the present study aims to assess the clinical performance and patient-centered outcomes of oral rehabilitation with 3D-printed CDs fabricated using a new technique involving a maxillomandibular record device and smartphone-based facial scanning (TDE) compared with a technique employing conventional wax occlusion rims (TPO). A randomized crossover double-blind clinical trial will be conducted. A pilot study will include 20 participants to calculate the sample size (α = 5%; β = 20%). Participants will be randomized into two groups: TDE-TPO (rehabilitated first with the new technique using the record device and facial scanning, followed after 3 months by the technique with wax occlusion rims, also for 3 months) and TPO-TDE (opposite order). Calibration will be performed before the study with two experienced examiners. The following variables will be evaluated: fabrication time, denture prototype quality, final denture quality, occlusal contacts, adjustment time, traumatic lesions, number of adjustment sessions, oral health–related quality of life, patient satisfaction, masticatory performance, orofacial esthetics, mandibular functional limitation, willingness to pay, and technique/denture preference. For normally distributed data, paired t-test, Wilcoxon, and McNemar tests will be applied (α = 5%; β = 20%). It is expected that the new technique using a maxillomandibular record device and smartphone-based facial scanning will reduce clinical and laboratory time while yielding similar or superior results compared with the conventional technique in terms of clinical performance and patient-centered outcomes.
