SUMMARY:

Periapical granulomas and radicular cysts are frequent common lesions that involveaffecting the supporting tissues of the teeth and result from pulp necrosis. Most of them are caused by microorganisms after breaking the integrity of the external surface of a tooth, exposing the dentin, and allowing so thatthe irritants from the intracanal microbiota travel to toreach the periapex, where the initial inflammatory reaction is triggered in order toto prevent the spread of the disease. infectious process for to the alveolar bone. Defense mechanisms include inflammatory and resorptive events, involving proteins that play a significant role in bone resorption, such as interleukins and matrix metalloproteinases. In these processes, the expression of the pro-inflammatory cytokine IL-1 in macrophages and other cells stands out, in addition to metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) and metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2), enzymes that perform vital functions in processes physiological, such as tissue morphogenesis, repair, remodeling and wound healing, but which are also involved in the remodeling of the extracellular matrix and maintenance of the periapical lesion. In view of the above, the objective of this research is to evaluate the immunoexpression of these proteins in order toto relate itwith to the profile of the inflammatory infiltrate profile and bone remodeling based on radiographic aspects, such as the extent of the lesion and other radiographic characteristics, in periapical granulomas and radicular cysts. diagnosed in the Pathological Anatomy and Oral Cytopathology laboratory of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte.
