SUMMARY:

In the modern world, polymeric membranes are widely used in industry. Since 1960,
when the first commercial membrane was obtained by the phase inversion method,
significant results in the development of new membrane separation technologies have
been achieved by the scientific community and commercially. After that, important
membrane separation processes such as reverse osmosis, microfiltration,
ultrafiltration, and gas separation were established on a large scale. Today, the
application of membrane technologies covers many areas, including environmental,
energy, electronics, chemical, and biotechnology. In this regard, many efforts are being
made to improve membrane performance with respect to anti-fouling properties,
mechanical strength, and chemical resistance. Polyethersulfone - (PES) is a widely
used material in membrane applications due to its exceptional mechanical strength,
thermal stability and fast precipitation. When compared to other polymers such as
polyacrylonitrile, cellulose, polyamide, polyimide, among others, PES has
disadvantages such as a high tendency to form fouling. Due to this inadequate property
of PES the need for improvement of this limitation arises. An alternative is the
production of hybrids from polymers with clay. The objective of this work is to control
the morphology of polyethersulfone and polyethersulfone/nanocarga membranes by
the precipitation immersion technique, aiming their application in separation
processes. Thus, polymeric membranes are being produced in this work from
amorphous polymer called polyethersulfone (PES) and nanocarga previously treated
by ion exchange process with organic cations. The membranes were obtained by
immersion to precipitation technique. Two different percentages of nanocharges are
used to obtain the membranes. The membranes obtained will be studied by XRD,
SEM, porosity analysis, FTIR, thermal analysis, contact angle and porosity and as
results are expected that the nanocharge provides improved properties of permeation,
filtration, thermal stability of membranes when compared to the membrane without the
nanocharge.
