SUMMARY:

Heart valve diseases constitute a significant public health problem, with a considerable impact on morbidity and mortality, making early diagnosis essential. However, teaching this subject in undergraduate medical education presents limitations, such as reduced workload, predominance of traditional methods, curricular fragmentation, and difficulties in integrating theory with clinical practice. These gaps compromise the development of clinical reasoning, reduce proficiency in cardiovascular semiology, and hinder the early identification of valvular diseases, especially in primary care. In this context, the adoption of active methodologies, educational technologies, and integrative strategies emerges as an alternative to improve the training process. This study aims to identify the main challenges and facilitators for teaching valvular diseases in undergraduate medical education. It is a scoping review, conducted according to the Joanna Briggs Institute guidelines and the PRISMA-ScR checklist, with the search strategy structured based on the PCC acronym (Population, Concept, and Context). Studies published in the last ten years, in English, Portuguese, and Spanish, were included, identified in the databases Virtual Health Library, Google Scholar, Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO), National Library of Medicine (PubMed), and ScienceDirect. The search was carried out between January and February 2026. For the search, Health Sciences Descriptors (DeCS) in English were used, combined through the Boolean operator AND: “Heart Valve Diseases,” “Education, Medical, Undergraduate,” and “Teaching.” Screening and selection of studies were performed by two independent reviewers, with the aid of Rayyan software. Of the 1,620 articles identified, 26 comprised the final sample. The studies revealed significant gaps in medical training, particularly in cardiovascular semiology, with low proficiency in cardiac auscultation, limited practical exposure, and difficulties in linking theory and practice. On the other hand, facilitators included the incorporation of active methodologies, clinical simulation, and the use of diagnostic technologies, which contribute to the development of clinical reasoning, greater diagnostic confidence, and better knowledge integration. It is concluded that teaching valvular diseases in undergraduate medical education still presents limitations that negatively impact students’ clinical training. Therefore, curricular reorganization, strengthening of active methodologies, and integration of theory, practice, and diagnostic technologies are necessary to promote the development of essential competencies such as clinical reasoning, decision-making, and early diagnostic capacity, aligning medical education with contemporary demands of cardiovascular care.
