SUMMARY:

The unfavorable outcomes related to congenital syphilis are severe, and the goal of eradicating congenital syphilis by 2030, proposed by the WHO, becomes increasingly challenging in the global scenario of the growing progression of syphilis cases. We analyzed the epidemiological profile of congenital syphilis in the 5th Health Region - Santa Cruz/RN, between June 2016 and 2023. An observational, exploratory, and descriptive study with a quantitative, documental, and retrospective approach was conducted. For this purpose, 307 congenital syphilis notification forms from SINAN, completed by healthcare professionals at Ana Bezerra University Hospital between June 2016 and 2023, were analyzed. The municipalities in the 5th Health Region of RN with the highest congenital syphilis incidence rates were identified, as well as gaps that may lead to the prevalence of the condition. Subsequently, one municipality was selected for the implementation of the workshop “Combatting Syphilis from Pregnancy to Birth” as a health education strategy aimed at training PHC healthcare professionals to combat syphilis and congenital syphilis. The research project was submitted to the FACISA Research Ethics Committee and approved. Cases of congenital syphilis showed an upward trend between June 2016 and December 2020, a decline between 2021 and 2022, and then an increase again until 2023. This pattern differs from the trends observed in RN and Brazil during the same period. The analysis of average congenital syphilis incidence rates between June 2016 and December 2022 revealed that the municipalities with the highest incidence rates of congenital syphilis (per 1,000 live births) in the sample were Sao Bento do Trairi (23.6), Sao Pedro (23.4), Lajes Pintadas (23.2), and Bom Jesus (22.4). Furthermore, it was identified that from 2019 onward, gestational syphilis was predominantly diagnosed during labor rather than prenatal care, highlighting the fragility of prenatal care services. Thus, the workshop “Combatting Syphilis from Pregnancy to Birth” was developed and implemented as a strategy to train PHC healthcare professionals in combating syphilis and congenital syphilis, aiming to prevent new cases and vertical transmission of syphilis. The workshop was conducted on October 28, 2024, with the participation of 21 professionals, including nurses, nursing technicians, and CHWs. The topics addressed included the epidemiological situation of syphilis, the natural history of the disease, clinical and laboratory diagnosis, treatment, mandatory reporting, and case monitoring. Finally, the workshop was evaluated by participants through feedback and a dedicated evaluation tool. Studies analyzing the epidemiological profile of specific diseases are essential as they guide intervention strategies and resource allocation to critical areas, enhancing the efficiency of health actions. Moreover, health education, besides being necessary, is well-received by healthcare professionals and contributes to strengthening public health policies and promoting maternal and child health.
