SUMMARY:

According to INCA, the estimate for Brazil for each year of the 2020-2022 triennium is 625,000 new cases of cancer per year. Some types of cancers have screening methods that can diagnose them at an early stage. Breast cancer is responsible for about 30% of cancer cases in women and with an estimate of causing 15% of deaths caused among other types of cancer. Between 50 and 69 years, MS recommends screening with mammography. Cervical cancer is one of the leading causes of death worldwide, with approximately 530,000 cases and 275,000 deaths every year. Cytopathological examination of the cervix is recommended by the Ministry of Health as a screening test. The recommendation is to perform cytopathological examination in women aged 25 to 60 years. This work aims to evaluate the accessibility of screening methods available for breast and cervical cancer in the female population recommended for screening by the Ministry of Health in the municipality of Caicó/RN from 2014 to 2020. In this municipality, it was observed that access to mammography exams is superior to other regions. There is a great access of the population recommended by the Ministry of Health to screening mammography exams and, consequently, there is a lower diagnosis of breast cancer. It is observed that access to screening results in a lower percentage of deaths when compared to the other regions studied. Screening data for cervical cancer show that the municipality of Caicó has an average about three times higher than the national, regional and state scenarios. However, preventive screening tests at high rates and histological tests at similar levels did not result in a decrease in the percentage of deaths as expected. The Northeast region has the highest average percentage of deaths from cervical cancer, followed by the municipality of Caicó and the state of Rio Grande do Norte. More in-depth studies involving technical and logistical aspects in carrying out preventive exams are necessary to identify the possible causes of this incongruity.
