This paper seeks to analyze the stigmatization and social invisibility that permeate the life and death of Chiquinha do Pedregal, a black travesti from the inland municipality of Aracati-CE. Drawing on memory, life trajectories, and embodied experiences, I attempt to investigate within this ethnography the ways in which movements of invisibility and fear were constructed. The research highlights the absence of records, narratives, and representations about Chiquinha, but also about her humanity. Interviews, journeys, and bibliographic and documentary surveys were conducted for the construction and discussion of these writings. By re-inscribing her existence in the academic space, there is an expansion of the anthropological debate on rural “transvestilidade”, race, and “travesti” memories, producing narratives beyond the stigmas that have historically been attributed to her.

This research conducts an ethnography at the Passo da Pátria Full-Time State School, focusing on the artistic practices of high school students—such as zine drawings, collages, slams, posters, and performances. The central objective is to understand how these productions operate as languages that reframe educational pathways, analyzing the aesthetic and political elements they mobilize within the school's daily life. The study first seeks to comprehend the mutual influences between the school environment and students' cultural creations, taking social interactions and bodily experiences as key observational axes. It then investigates how these dynamics of creation and learning broaden discussions on the body, articulating anthropology, experience, and education. Finally, it analyzes the use of the body-territory category as an analytical tool to interpret the processes of subjectivation, resistance, and transformation emerging from artistic-cultural practices within the school space. The methodology is based on participant observation (Guber, 2001), ranging from activities within an extension project to field diary records, also incorporating visual records and interviews. Drawing on the categories of body-territory (Miranda, 2014; 2020; 2025), experience (Bondìa, 2002), and aesthetic-bodily knowledge (Gomes, 2017), the study demonstrates that students' artistic productions constitute forms of creative and political agency, enabling the (re)territorialization of identities and negotiation with school norms. It further argues that university extension, conceived as an aesthetic-political practice, constitutes a fundamental space for mediating and enhancing these processes, resisting neoliberal logics in education.

Quilombola populations have different perceptions of the various issues that have historically surrounded them, such as vulnerabilities, territorial conflicts, and external threats from enterprises. This research investigates the sociocultural effects of the implementation of renewable energy projects in two quilombola communities in Paraíba: Pitombeira (affected by the Luzia Solar Complex) and Serra do Abreu (under the influence of the Pedra Lavrada Wind Complex). Based on ethnographic research conducted by a quilombola researcher, the analysis focuses on the emic categories of “prejudice” and “damage,” which emerge from local narratives to describe the effects experienced, as opposed to the technical and external concept of “impact.” The study documents profound transformations in the way of life, social organization, territory, and environment, highlighting the absence of prior, free, and informed consultation. The research, therefore, articulates anthropological and epistemological criticism, denouncing how centralized energy transition reproduces colonial logics of accumulation by dispossession, environmental racism, and violation of quilombola territorial rights.

This dissertation seeks to highlight aspects of the transformation of the coastal and peri-urban district of Pium/RN, through a graphic-visual approach—integrating drawing, photography, video, and collage—emphasizing the relational and the multisensorial. Walks through the territory, conversations with its inhabitants, and the production of sensitive images aim to recognize flows and elements of the social, cultural, and ecological changes in the landscape, intensified by real estate speculation and accelerated urbanization in the Capitalocene. The methodology combined a multi-sited approach (Marcus, 1995) with Tim Ingold’s graphic- anthropology (2015) and Sarah Pink’s sensory and multimodal ethnography (2015), while also engaging with Anna Tsing’s environmental-ecological perspective (2022). The study suggests the importance of attending to this moment of transformation in Pium, as well as reflecting on ways of being, sensing, and narrating in ethnography, underscoring the potential of engaging with image.

This dissertation investigates how textile practices — specifically fuxico and hand embroidery — of the Fuxiqueiras do Bem group are intertwined with their experiences as women in the quilombola territory of Mituaçu, located in Conde (PB). The central objective of this work is to understand the influence of these practices on the construction of identity, political resistance, and the preservation of the collective memory of these women. Through meetings between 2024 and 2025, this ethnography proposes embroidery as a research method. Articulating the concepts of racialized territories (Givânia Silva, 2022) and territories of affections (Mariléa de Almeida, 2022), the research demonstrates that the Fuxiqueiras redefine the practice of textiles — historically used as a tool for female domestication — transforming it into a gendered territory of leisure, escape from loneliness, and political agency. Among its main conclusions is that textiles act as a suture capable of reintegrating biographies and memories into the reverse side of official history, proposing another history of threads that values textiles as legitimate anthropological text and document.

This thesis investigates the implementation of Quilombola School Education (EEQ) in the Capoeiras Quilombola Community (CQC), located in Macaíba/RN, from the perspective of the Anthropology of Education. The study stems from the need to understand the tensions between legal achievements—specifically Law 10.639/03 and the National Curricular Guidelines for Quilombola School Education—and the daily reality experienced by residents, leaders, and educators, as well as mothers of children studying both within and outside the territory. The general objective of this work is to analyze how the educational process, in both school and non-school settings, is experienced in the Capoeiras Quilombola Community (CQC), investigating the tensions between legal guidelines and the practical reality of the territory. The methodological path involved documentary research on public policies for racial equality, combined with immersive fieldwork. Participant observation was used as the central axis, complemented by interviews with open and closed questions and informal conversations that allowed for the collection of spontaneous accounts. The recording of local memory was made possible through photographs, recorded narratives, and field diaries, which were essential instruments for documenting the orality and cultural manifestations that configure the territory as a space of living learning. Additionally, bibliographic research was conducted to ground the dialogue between empirical data and the concepts of racial literacy and decolonization. The results reveal a significant gap between legislative achievements and pedagogical practice in the schools attended by the community's children. It was observed that the formal school structure still operates under universal models that occasionally dialogue with the Quilombola identity, resulting in the invisibilization of local knowledge within the teaching environment. On the other hand, through narratives and daily observation, it was identified that non-school education, vibrant in community relations and the generational transmission of knowledge, functions as the true pillar of identity maintenance. The study demonstrates that the process of educational strengthening occurs more intensely in spaces of living and resistance than within the institutionalized structure.

This paper analyzes the legal culture of the Calon gypsies in the cities of Serra Negra do Norte and Cruzeta (RN), examining the tensions between their autonomous conflict resolution practices and the Brazilian state legal system. The research combines ethnographic and autoethnographic approaches, using participant observation, open interviews, and daily monitoring of interactions between gypsies and public institutions. Based on references such as Silvio Almeida, Michel Misse, Boaventura de Sousa Santos, Roberto Kant de Lima, and Erving Goffman, the study discusses how structural racism, criminal subjugation, and epistemicide shape the Calon experience, producing stigmas, symbolic violence, and limits on access to state justice. The research describes the internal functioning of the ranches, highlighting the centrality of oral tradition, the moral authority of elders, and family mediation in resolving disputes. It shows that Calon justice constitutes a normative system of its own, guided by the restoration of harmony and the preservation of family cohesion, constituting a case of legal pluralism. In dialogue with the state, there is a persistence of institutional fear, mutual distrust, and practices of invisibility that hinder the realization of basic rights. It is concluded that understanding Calon justice is fundamental to thinking about intercultural public policies and recognizing the legitimacy of traditional legal knowledge in relation to the state order.

This anthropological investigation analyzes the social, political, and legal processes involved in the recognition of fibromyalgia as a disability in Brazil. The study examines how social actors, political institutions, and legal texts understand the experience of fibromyalgia, investigating the mechanisms through which this chronic pain condition becomes an identity marker for people who experience the disease. Adopting documentary analysis as a methodological starting point, the research maps and compares state legislative initiatives that seek to equate fibromyalgia with disability, critically examining the legal categories mobilized in these legal instruments and their implications for the daily lives of individuals. Beyond the description of this political-legal movement, the work problematizes the conceptual tensions and social effects arising from this classification, articulating bibliographic discussion with an ethnographic approach sensitive to narratives and bodily experiences. The investigation culminates in an analysis of the implications of legal recognition on the subjectivity and life trajectories of people with fibromyalgia, especially exploring the dimensions of suffering, identity, and biological citizenship that emerge in this process. Furthermore, the work stems from an anthropological analysis, focusing on ethnography as a perspective in order to understand the dynamics of participants in an association and how the experience of fibromyalgia can be compared to a disability.

This dissertation analyzes the role of the Associação de Amparo às Mulheres (AMPAR), in the state of Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil, in addressing gender-based violence, through an ethnographic approach focused on practices of reception, guidance, and ongoing support for women experiencing violence. Gender-based violence is understood as a structural phenomenon, articulated through power relations that traverse bodies, territories, and institutions, in dialogue with authors such as Heleieth Saffioti, Joan Wallach Scott, Judith Butler, Patricia Hill Collins, Rita Segato, and Veena Das. Fieldwork was conducted through participant observation of AMPAR’s institutional activities, including service provision and the workshops developed within the project Sempre Vivas, conceived as a methodological framework that integrates attentive listening, collective formation, and the shared production of meaning. These workshops constituted a privileged space for narrative construction, revealing how experiences of violence are lived, interpreted, and re-signified in everyday life. The analysis demonstrates that AMPAR operates as an intermediary node within the protection network for women in Parnamirim, mediating access to formal services and translating institutional demands into practices that are accessible to the women it serves. This dynamic highlights that protection networks do not operate in a linear or exclusively state-driven manner, but are instead constituted through relationships, negotiations, and situated practices.By emphasizing the central role of civil society organizations in the implementation of public policies, this dissertation contributes to a situated understanding of gender-based violence response networks, underscoring the importance of care practices, listening, and mediation in producing concrete responses to lived experiences of violence..

This study examines how the Sindicato do Crime, a faction with a significant presence in Natal, manifests territorial disputes through graffiti tagging, understood as inscriptions that reveal specific socio-spatial dynamics. The study is based on the hypothesis that graffiti tagging transcends the notion of deviance or a simple indicator of criminality, functioning instead as an insurgent cartography that makes explicit relations of power, belonging, and conflict, while simultaneously disrupting the city’s established tourist landscape. The research is conducted using a qualitative methodology, based on fieldwork carried out through trips on urban bus routes connecting the neighborhoods of Felipe Camarão and Ponta Negra, combining systematic observation of the routes, subjects, and spatialities with photographic documentation of the inscriptions, landscapes, and urban flows. The research aims to demonstrate that, in the current context, the Crime Syndicate acts as the primary agent behind criminal graffiti tagging in Natal, playing a structuring role in the production and organization of power relations within the urban space. Its inscriptions not only designate territories and subjects but also perform territorial control by delimiting boundaries, marking ownership, guiding behavior, and sustaining practices such as parallel taxation and the imposition of hierarchies. Thus, the research demonstrates that graffiti tagging plays a central role in the production, interpretation, and regulation of contemporary urban territorialities, serving as an analytical key to understanding the disputes that traverse the city.

This work addresses the emergence of a machinery of expulsion, understood as a coercive arrangement aimed at the production, administration, and legitimation of Zionist colonial violence in the context of the Israeli occupation of Palestine. It investigates the tactics of internal organization of this violence and the modes of operation of certain agents in maintaining a permanent regime of expulsion and elimination of the native presence. The concept of a machinery of expulsion thus functions as an analytical tool capable of apprehending the articulation between discourses, practices, and technologies that operate in overlapping ways in the daily lives of Palestinian people. Through it, this work identifies lines of continuity between state policies of territorial colonization, contemporary practices of settler terrorism, and the production of a moral and legal horizon, anchored in fundamentalist religious Zionism, that authorizes the expulsion, forced displacement, and death of the Palestinian people. It takes into account the transformation of peasant and Bedouin spaces into zones of agricultural and military colonization, as well as the everyday operation of outposts as paramilitary devices of expropriation, intimidation, and attack. In doing so, it demonstrates how the machinery of expulsion operates simultaneously in territory, bodies, and discourse, sustaining ethnic cleansing as a state policy. The methodology employed included ethnographic fieldwork in Palestine in the years 2022 and 2024, in addition to analyses of documents and archives, and critical analysis of the literature

This research seeks to discuss how resistance processes occur around discussions on gender, race-ethnicity, and class, which have grown in recent decades within Capoeira Angola, based on women's agency. It addresses the formation of a network of women capoeiristas in the Northeast who seek to strengthen women's autonomy in Capoeira Angola and draw from the experience and collective construction of affections and controversies inherent in the practice. We think of gender, ethnic-racial condition, class, and sexualities not just as subjectivities, but as constructions that are daily, practiced, and discussed by cultural agents. Thru observation and experience with the Dona Cora Study Group in Natal/RN and the Luz Di Angola group in Olinda/PE, as well as women leaders in Lisbon, in the Dendê de Maré and Irmãos Guerreiros groups, we present ethnographic results based on field diary records and recordings of some training sessions and events of both groups. Regarding the groups in Lisbon, we rely on the records shared by the groups on Instagram and my experience in the city during my doctoral internship. As a result, new ways of conducting Capoeira Angola spaces have emerged, which, even tho tied to hierarchy and tradition, demonstrate greater concern for building safe spaces for women and people with dissident genders, as well as promoting esthetics as a foundation, especially in Natal. The narratives of Angolan women reveal that Capoeira is not just a cultural space, but a formative, political, and esthetic space, fundamental for the elaboration of identities and (re)existences. The Capoeira Angola, discourses and practices are constructed around concepts dear to anthropology, such as ancestry, esthetics, and performance, which are activated in the game and in the experiences of Angolan women.

The expansion of wind energy in Northeastern Brazil has generated socio-environmental conflicts that challenge the discourse of a sustainable energy transition. Based on an ethnographic study conducted in the Quilombola Community of Macambira, located in the Serra de Sant'Ana, Rio Grande do Norte State, this dissertation analyzes the impacts of the implementation of the Macambira I and II wind farms and the socio-political processes mobilized by the community in its struggle to secure its territorial rights. The research adopted a qualitative approach and an ethnographic method, combining participant observation, semi-structured interviews, and document ethnography. Fieldwork was conducted between 2022 and 2023 and was complemented, through 2026, by monitoring developments in territorial reoccupation initiatives and the land regularization process. The findings show that the wind energy projects overlapped with long-standing land conflicts and the slow pace of land regularization, affecting land access and use, food sovereignty, health, labor, sociobiodiversity, and everyday community life. The absence of Free, Prior and Informed Consultation, as established by the International Labour Organization (ILO) Convention No. 169, reinforced power asymmetries and restricted community participation in decisions concerning its territory. In response, the community strengthened strategies of resistance, reterritorialization, and ethnodevelopment through collective organization and the valorization of traditional knowledge. The dissertation demonstrates that the effective recognition of Quilombola territorial rights is a prerequisite for a socially just energy transition, contributing to anthropological debates and to the improvement of public policies on land regularization, environmental licensing, prior consultation, and territorial justice.

This thesis has the general objective of pursuing the crossroads surrounding the development of the Menstrual Health Protection and Promotion Program, established by Law No. 14,214/2021, examining how its formulation is shaped by the intersections of the body, gender, race, sexuality, territories, and consumption. I argue that changes in the fields of health and menstruations in Brazil have not been produced solely by the institutional instances of the State, but emerge, above all, from a web of civil society agencements that politicise menstrual blood before and beyond any legislation; and that the category of menstrual dignity, originally formulated as a situated political claim, has been impacted by the market related to menstruation and by international development agendas, becoming a device that articulates the management of bodies, the expansion of consumption and the reproduction of colonial logics. The research draws on observation begun in 2019, following the legislative articulations and menstrual activisms that, under the category of menstrual poverty, discussed the distribution of sanitary pads, an item seen as indispensable and as the object that brings dignity to those who menstruate. In light of anthropological discussions on body, gender, colonialities and territories, and from a multiple and multi-sited ethnographic perspective, I examine how this bodily fluid was constructed as a target of political and social concerns affected by consumption in Brazil, holding agency of its own while also being enacted by other mediators in each sphere it occupies. The thesis combines multi-sited and digital ethnography, with participant observation in digital and in-person settings; documentary analysis of 21 official documents, including bills, committee reports, the presidential veto, decrees and ministerial documents; semi-structured interviews by video call and ethnographic engagement with eight interlocutors from the North, Northeast, Central-West and Southeast regions, plus one transcribed collective meeting; and consumption ethnography of websites, campaigns and institutional profiles of menstrual market brands. I follow menstrual education and menstrual activisms organised in the country; the trajectory of menstrual legislation, from its initial drafting to the enactment of the Law and the implications of its implementation; the connections between the territories of the North and the Northeast, crossed by the experiences of women in Roraima and Acre; and the historical and social changes surrounding sanitary pads within the menstrual consumption industry. The findings indicate that menstrual public policy remains under constant transformation, even though it began by biologising menstruation and silencing the multiplicity of those who menstruate; that the presidential veto and its subsequent overturn make explicit moral, party-political and gender disputes within the documentary production of State public policies; that menstrual hygiene management, in migrating from the North to the Global South, replaces the vocabulary of risk with that of empowerment without displacing the product as the solution; and that, in Amazonian territories, Afro-entrepreneurship and menstrual craftwork reposition menstrual dignity as a practice built from the body-territory. As final propositions, I present an anthropology of menstruations interwoven across fields as diverse as health, documents, the State, the digital and consumption, contributing to discussions on intersectoral menstrual health policies in Brazil.

This research aims to understand how artists leverage public administration to their advantage while simultaneously resisting the oppression and erasure promoted by municipal governance in Sobral, Ceará. I problematize the motivations that drive local government and graffiti artists to contest urban furniture through visual expression. Authors such as Barbosa Júnior (2019), Oliveira Campos (2007, 2009), Coradini (2016), and Diógenes (2015), among others, help me grasp the effervescence of graffiti in urban spaces and its agencies.
Throughout the fieldwork, I observed artists applying to cultural grant funding as a way to secure access to the city, building visual narratives about belonging. Silva (2025), Semensato and Barbalho (2021), and Gonçalves Dias (2021) discuss culture within this context as a fundamental right, as essential as any other.
The methodological approach aligns with street ethnography (ROCHA; ECKERT, 2003) and urban wandering (CARERI, 2013)—experiencing and discovering the city—which are crucial practices in Urban and Visual Anthropology. During these itineraries, I photographed and filmed street art alongside moments spent with graffiti artists. Authors such as Samain (2012) and Caiuby Novaes (2012) guide my image-based ethnographic practice, resulting in sections and chapters developed through Photoethnography (ACHUTTI, 2004), where images function as text. Three key artists from the Sobral graffiti scene collaborate as main interlocutors in this dissertation; I accompanied and interviewed them between 2021 and 2025.

ABSTRACT
This thesis analyzes the contemporary energy transition in Abya Yala from the territorial perspective of Indigenous peoples, examining how this new global horizon of energy reorganization reshapes the historical conditions of extractivism in Andean and Amazonian territories. Based on the observation that the energy transition is presented as an unavoidable planetary necessity, the research asks: how have experiences and forms of knowledge situated in distinct historical, political, and geographical contexts come to be recognized as part of the same phenomenon? Methodologically, the research is situated within the political anthropology of territory and adopts a qualitative, autoethnographic, comparative, and multisited approach. Fieldwork was conducted in Amazonian Indigenous territories, working with the Sarrapia people in Colombia and the Xipaya people in Brazil. It also included spaces of international Indigenous political articulation in the city of Puno, Peru. The results show that the energy transition does not represent a rupture with previous extractive cycles, but rather a contemporary reformulation of their mechanisms of legitimation through the language of global climate sustainability. Among the Xipaya, this violence extends beyond the denial of formal rights and reaches the sphere of social esteem, disrupting the communal fabric that sustains the territory as a living world. In this context, resistance also meant producing records, constructing their own narratives, and circulating them beyond the territories where conflicts took place. Based on a comparative analysis of the Andes and the Amazon, the thesis proposes the concept of Latin American Indigenous energy sacrifice zone to describe the territorial reorganization to which Indigenous peoples are subjected as a result of contemporary global energy demands.

This text presents preliminary results from an ethnographic experience in the field of quilombola school education in the state of Rio Grande do Norte, focusing on two communities: Coqueiros, in the municipality of Ceará-Mirim, where the Sérgio Varela Santiago Municipal School and the CERU Professor José Tito Júnior School are located; and Sibaúma, in Tibau do Sul, where the Padre Armando de Paiva Municipal School is located. The research investigated how issues related to quilombola identities, belonging, and differentiated education policies are articulated in everyday school practices and beyond, observing how these social dynamics rearrange the relationship between school, territory, and institutional recognition. Based on a multi-sited ethnographic strategy/experience, the educational practices of these communities were examined through field observation, interviews with teachers and community leaders, analysis of institutional documents and educational legislation, as well as a bibliographic review. The research adopts a comparative approach to examine contrasts and similarities between the two territories, considering the ways in which schools are mobilized in the construction of belonging, the affirmation of Black identities, and the reception (or rejection) of diversity-oriented policies. Although supported by legal frameworks such as Law No. 10.639/2003, the National Curriculum Guidelines, and the State Education Plan (Law No. 10.049/2016), the implementation of quilombolaeducation in RN remains shaped by local disputes. The data pointed to a mismatch between the official recognition of the communities and school practices, the redefinition of quilombola identity in Coqueiros, and the distancing from the quilombola educational agenda in Sibaúma. The schools functioned as sites of symbolic dispute, influenced by still-weak public policies and the limited incorporation of local knowledge. This study presents partial field data, with further ethnographic deepening planned for a later version of the thesis.

This doctoral dissertation is situated within the field of Social Anthropology and focuses on traditional fishing communities along the coast of Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil. It brings the category of body-territory into dialogue with a decolonial, feminist, and ethnographically situated perspective. Its main objective is to investigate how the expansion of offshore wind energy, institutionally framed through the rhetoric of energy transition and sustainability, produces socio-environmental, territorial, economic, political, and psychosocial impacts on fishing communities along the coast of Rio Grande do Norte. Drawing on fieldwork conducted between 2021 and 2026, during which I accompanied women leaders in artisanal fishing across territories such as Enxu Queimado, Galinhos, Macau, Guamaré, Caiçara do Norte, and São Bento do Norte, the dissertation examines how these women perceive, narrate, and confront the impacts of these projects even before the physical installation of infrastructure at sea. The research demonstrates that such impacts are not limited to physical changes in the environment; rather, they permeate bodies, community ties, forms of labor, ways of inhabiting the territory, care relations, mental health, and visions of the future. By recognizing women fishers as central epistemic and political subjects, the dissertation critically examines the limitations of technical regimes for recognizing impacts and highlights the colonial continuities that structure the so-called energy transition.

This thesis, with a qualitative and ethnographic approach, investigates how family and the State articulate subsistence in urban margins. The focus is on the pursuit of social assistance, especially through the Novo Bolsa Família program, in two peripheral neighborhoods of Parnamirim/RN. The research followed subjects historically vulnerable and responsible for domestic care, revealing that their family projects operate as collective resistance to structural precariousness, institutional neglect, and neoliberal governance. The analysis shows that domestic and public management intertwine, blurring boundaries between private and state spheres. Within the Unified Social Assistance System (SUAS), the study highlights impasses in implementing territorialization and socio-familial matrix axes, which intensify bureaucratic and moral barriers, particularly in the control of “single-person” and “cohabiting” families. The collaborative methodology involved advisory work, accompaniment in socio-assistance demands, and a collective lunch for experience sharing. The textualized accounts expose gender-based violence, illness, and mobility restrictions that hinder habitability in the studied area. The conclusion is that the pursuit of income transfers and other socio-assistance rights goes beyond immediate financial need: it constitutes political action against historical pauperization. By challenging bureaucratic limits, manipulating legal categories, and weaving solidarity networks, subjects shape their spaces and ensure present and future survival for themselves and their kin, engaging in a daily struggle over today and tomorrow against social exclusion projects.

This dissertation analyzes the constitution and activities of the Black Movement in Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil, between 1980 and 2015, considering the forms of political organization, identity construction, and resistance to racism developed by Black men, women, and collectives in response to the historical denial of the Black presence in the state. The study brings together the trajectories and narratives of co-participants connected to different social and political spaces, including students, teachers, intellectuals, artists, Black women, quilombola communities, Black youth, and members of African-based religious traditions. The research draws on semi-structured interviews, participant observation, field notes, institutional documents, newspapers, personal archives of the co-participants, photographs, flyers, posters, and other records related to the experiences of the Black Movement in Rio Grande do Norte. The ethnographic approach also considers the author's position as both a researcher and an activist in the Black Movement and the Black Women's Movement. The findings show that Black individuals and organizations developed practices of resistance, belonging, and political participation throughout different moments of the period studied. During the 1980s and 1990s, groups and organizations expanded their presence in cultural, educational, trade union, and public spheres while establishing connections with regional and national networks. Between 2000 and 2015, Black Movement organizations, quilombola groups, African-based religious communities, and Black women's organizations participated in the development of racial equality policies and social accountability mechanisms. The dissertation demonstrates that these trajectories challenge interpretations that have minimized or denied the Black presence in Rio Grande do Norte and documents, within the fields of anthropology and memory studies, distinctive forms of organization, resistance, memory production, and political action developed by the Black Movement in the state.
