SUMMARY:

Introduction: Social cognition in post-stroke patients is one of the fields of investigation increasingly explored in the study of psychiatric disorders after acquired brain injury. It is commonly conceptualized as a complex construct of socio-cognitive skills related to the ability to process social information, understand and interpret the mental state of other individuals in different social situations. It is a set of cognitive domains, including theory of mind (ToM) as one of the most prevalent in studies that investigate changes in social cognition in post-stroke patients. ToM refers to the ability to understand and represent interpersonal emotions based on the perception of others, so deficits caused in this component of social cognition can impair the processing of information, and there may be an influence of the laterality of the post-stroke brain injury at the level of commitment. In this sense, different evidences suggest that the functions related to social cognition can be lateralized to regions of the right hemisphere, which may cause greater impairment in patients with lesions in the right hemisphere. Objective: This research intends to investigate whether the laterality of the post-stroke hemispheric lesion influences the performance of ToM. Methodology: This is a cross-sectional study, which included patients with a clinical diagnosis of stroke, age ≥18 years, without cognitive deficits suggestive of the Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE). Participants underwent a single assessment using the Theory of Mind Task Battery (ToM TB). And later, the results were allocated into two groups according to the laterality of the lesion, that is, Group with lesion in the right hemisphere (LHD) and group with lesion in the left hemisphere (LHE). Partial results: The findings of this research suggest that there was no difference between the groups analyzed LHD and LHE in relation to social cognition assessed by ToM TB (p> 0.05).
