SUMMARY:

The American manatee, Trichechus manatus, is classified as Endangered in Brazil, with an estimated population between 500 and 1,100 individuals and threatened by habitat loss and fragmentation. This study aimed to investigate the habitat suitability for the species along the Brazilian coast, as well as the degree of cumulative anthropogenic impact. An ensemble forecasting was generated from 120 habitat suitability models built using the BIOCLIM, Domain, Mahalanobis, GLM, Maxent and SVM algorithms, based on important environmental variables for the manatee distribution. The suitability results obtained were confronted with to the degree of cumulative impact observed on the coast of Brazil, and to the build the species potential distribution map. Areas of low suitability for manatees were found in the mouth of the Amazon River, and in parts of the coast of Maranhão, Ceará, and Rio Grande do Norte states. The southern limit of potential distribution was observed in the Baia-de-Todos-os-Santos, state of Bahia. Cumulative impact analyzes indicate that most of the high suitability areas also have low anthropogenic impact; therefore, low cost proactive conservation strategies are recommended. It was also observed that, although in smaller numbers, the areas of high suitability and high accumulated impact are found mostly in the coastal area of Northeastern Brazil, and these are areas that demand reactive conservation strategies. The results found in this study can help to determine conservation strategies for the species along the entire coast of Brazil, allowing decision-making and resource allocation more efficiently.
