SUMMARY:

Introduction: The consolidation of PHC determines the commitment of the SUS as a universal public health policy. Among the professionals that comprise it are nurses, as the largest workforce in quantitative and qualitative terms of health care. The role of nurses in PHC has become an instrument for changes in health care practices in the SUS, as it responds to the proposal of the new care model that is centered on comprehensive care, contributing to the strengthening of PHC . Objectives: To understand the professional practices of nurses who work in PHC in Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil. Methodology: This is a qualitative research, characterized as an extract from the nationwide multicenter research entitled “Nursing Practices in the Context of Primary Health Care (PHC): National Mixed Methods Study”, Content Analysis was carried out de Bardin, with the support of the IRaMuTeQ software, of the qualitative results obtained in five municipalities in Rio Grande do Norte, in which 45 professional nurses were interviewed. This project was approved in its entirety by the Ethics Committee under opinion nº 3.619.308 and CAAE: 20814619.2.0000.0030 (CEP/FS/UnB). Preliminary results: The work process of nurses in PHC focuses on programmatic groups, collective care and spontaneous demand. In this scenario, the perception of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the UBS routine is still being debated, revealing obstacles such as lack of infrastructure, inputs and overload. The survey of aspects regarding autonomy and professional recognition highlights prenatal care and collective care as areas of greater autonomy, in addition to the lack of legal support that allows for more independent action, when relating these two variables it follows that as the autonomy is low, there is low resolution in the development of actions, culminating in the population understanding nurses as medical “assistants”. Final considerations of the work: There is little use of the work potential of nurses in PHC, who often need to interrupt their work so that the medical professional can provide solutions through the request, prescription or referral of the user of the health service, even if there is care protocols, many professionals feel the need for greater legal support to act comprehensively in caring for people, without fragmentation.
