SUMMARY:

Introduction: Breastfeeding (BF), exclusively recommended up to 6 months, is a complex practice permeated by several factors that can contribute positively or negatively to its continuity. Studies show that breastfeeding goes beyond biological issues, being also affected by psychosocial factors. Social support is one of the social factors with a great impact on BF. In the case of psychological factors, the study of the Locus of Control in Health seeks to identify the degree to which the individual believes that he himself, other people or chance control his state of health, which may be related to the way he acts or makes decisions, which is a topic of great importance in breastfeeding. The study of the various aspects related to BF becomes relevant in view of such low rates of exclusive breastfeeding. Objective: To investigate the relationship between the type of breastfeeding practiced by puerperal women with the locus of health control and the social support received. Methodology: Quantitative, descriptive, analytical and longitudinal study that will be carried out with puerperal women at Hospital do Seridó (Caicó/RN) and will be developed in two moments: the first in the immediate puerperium during hospitalization and the second after 30 days from the date of delivery . Initially, after acceptance of the Free and Informed Consent Form, the Health Locus of Control Scale (MHLC) and the Breastfeeding Observation and Evaluation Form will be applied, and personal and pregnancy data will be collected through the medical records. In addition, the participants will be asked about their perception of breastfeeding through closed structured questions. In the second moment, telephone calls will be made to the study participants where they will be asked about the type of breastfeeding their babies are receiving and for the application of the Multidimensional Perceived Social Support Scale (MSPSS). The scale can also be answered virtually through the Google Forms platform. New mothers over 18 years of age, in rooming-in, mothers of full-term babies who are exclusively breastfeeding, will be included in the study. Women who are seropositive for the human immunodeficiency virus, mothers of twins, mothers of premature infants, mothers who are separated from their babies in the first 48 hours after delivery, mothers of babies who are in intensive or semi-intensive care and mothers of babies who have received food supplementation in the first 48 hours after birth. The sample size will be for convenience, estimating the participation of 280 postpartum women, considering an average of 70 deliveries per month. Data will be tabulated using the Statistical Package Social Science software and descriptive and correlation analyzes and comparison between groups will be performed. Expected results: it is expected to contribute to the improvement of actions to support, promote and protect breastfeeding, since by knowing the Locus of Control of the Health of puerperal women it is possible to direct and carry out a more effective planning of these actions. In addition, it is expected to raise reflections on the importance and impact of social support on breastfeeding.
