SUMMARY:

Adolescence is marked, among other factors, by the increase in daitime sleepiness as a result of insuficiente and poor sleep quality during school days, especially in adolescentes who study in the morning shift. These consequence are related to the adolescents biological tendency to sleep and wake up later, a factor known as phase delay, which has negative impacts on students health and school performance. Among social factors, the rate of urbanization has been studied, as a possiblem factor that impacts the quantity anda quality of sleep, and daytime sleepiness of adolescents. In addition, studies that assess sleep problems are importante and can contribute as a basis for inserting this theme withi adolescents health programs, aiming to raise awareness among young people and the academic community of the importance of sleep for health. With this in mind, the aim of this study is to characterize the pattern of the sleep and wake cycle, the quality of sleep and daytime sleepiness in adolescents from federal technical education institutions in Rio Grande do Norte (RN). Developed with students from the campuses of IFRN Natal central, Lajes, São Gonçalo do Amarante and Santa Cruz, 704 students, of both sexes, who were attending the 1st, 2nd and 3rd year of high school, in the morning and afternoon shifts, were interviewed. Three questionnaires were applied: “Identification Form”, “Pediatric Daytime Sleepiness Scale (PDSS)” and “Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index”. The data obtained will be tabulated in a Microsoft Excel version 2010 spreadsheet and will be analyzed using the SPSS version 22.0 program, according to the descriptive and inferential statistics, using the necessary statistical tests and based on the scientific literature and presented through graphs, charts and tables. Descriptive statistics of sleeping hours, waking up, duration of sleep, quality of sleep and daytime sleepiness will be performed based on the average of the values reported by the study population. In addition, the chi-square test will be performed to assess the distribution of the observed frequencies in relation to the duration and quality of sleep, and the daytime sleepiness of the students evaluated.
