SUMMARY:

Sleep deprivation and different schedules of sleep and wake up between free days and work/study days, characterizing social lag, is a habit increasingly practiced in society. University students, there is a higher prevalence of this lifestyle, mainly due to social schedules. In the last decade, the internalization of higher education has led to the migration of students from neighboring municipalities to the university city, and this displacement may generate a change in lifestyle. Therefore, the aim of this study was to analyze the influence of Social Determinants of Health (SDH) on sleep duration and social lag in university students in the interior of Rio Grande do Norte (RN). This study was developed with students from the Faculty of Health Sciences of Trairi, located in Santa Cruz-RN, through the application of 04 questionnaires: “Health and sleep”; Munich Chronotype Questionnaire; Epworth Sleepiness Scale and Pittsburg Sleep Quality Index. The Poisson regression model adopted for the analyzes was carried out in two stages, in the intermediate model all independent variables with a value of p <0.20 in the chi-square test entered to the model. The final model included variables that obtained p <0.05 in the intermediate model. Sleep duration in the week less than 7h was prevalent in 72% of the sample. With regard to social lag, 78.2% presented social lag less than 2 hours, while 21.8% presented social lag greater than 2 hours. In the final regression model of the sleep duration in the week, it was observed that students from A and B social classes and men presented a prevalence of shorter sleep duration when compared to those from D and E social classes and women, respectively. Regarding the sleep duration in the weekend, it was observed that students who performed leisure activities before going to sleep and considered the bedroom as poor sleep location presented a higher prevalence of shorter sleep duration. In relation to the chronotype, students with intermediate and evening chronotype showed greater social lag when compared to morning chronotype. Those who performed household chores before going to sleep during the week and leisure activities before going to sleep at the weekend showed a higher prevalence of social lag than those who did not perform these behaviors. Therefore, university students from the interior of RN showed a high prevalence of shorter sleep duration during the week, however with a low prevalence of inadequate social lag. In addition, sleep duration and social lag were influenced by some of the SDH. It is important to note that this is an unprecedented study carried out with students from the interior of the state. Therefore, these discussions could help the university context and public health, and can expand the knowledge of how SDH impact sleep health. Considering that these university students will be future health professionals, the results of this study can serve as a basis for expanding the discussion and dissemination of knowledge about sleep hygiene in order to contribute to the learning process of these future health professionals.
