SUMMARY:

The new Coronavirus-2019 disease named (COVID-19) is a respiratory disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus. In January 2020, circulation of this pathogen, a new type of coronavirus that was causing severe pneumonia in some patients in China, was confirmed. Due to its high infectivity and pathogenicity, COVID-19 became a pandemic, declared by the World Health Organization (WHO) on March 11, 2020 and has been taking on catastrophic proportions in several countries, including Brazil. The clinical manifestations of infection by the new coronavirus have a wide spectrum and are still not entirely clear, what is known is that the virus has high transmissibility and causes an acute respiratory syndrome that varies from mild cases to very severe cases with respiratory failure, which can be fatal. Early recognition and rapid diagnosis are essential to prevent transmission and provide supportive care in a timely manner. The diagnosis for confirmation of the case is made by laboratory criteria and may be by molecular biology (RT-PCR), or by immunological test, with a positive result for IgM and / or IgG antibodies. For WHO, it is essential to expand the testing capacity of all suspects, so that the pandemic can be controlled. It is necessary for health laboratories to use appropriate biosafety practices, in order to avoid occupational contamination with SARS-CoV-2 and thus guarantee the health and safety of this workforce so important in facing the pandemic. In this perspective, recommendations for the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), as well as precautions that reduce the exposure of these professionals to the risk of contamination must be taken on a large scale. Thus, this study aims to analyze the conceptions of professionals who work in a reference laboratory for the diagnosis of COVID-19 on occupational risks of contamination by the new coronavirus and what are the protection and prevention measures adopted. This is a descriptive study, with a qualitative approach that will be carried out at the Institute of Tropical Medicine of the State of Rio Grande do Norte (IMT RN), a supplementary unit of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN). The study population will be composed of professionals working in the IMT RN laboratory and the sample will be composed of 17 participants. The instrument used for data collection will be a semi-structured interview script. The data related to subjective questions will be transcribed and categorized according to the content analysis proposed by Bardin (2016). The data analysis of the sociodemographic questionnaires will be developed with the aid of the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS), version 22 for Windows, using descriptive analysis, which will be presented in the form of tables and graphs.
