RESUMO:

Intestinal constipation (IC) constipation is a condition characterized by problems related to bowel movement. Although there is a considerable prevalence in the population, and women are at greater risk for the development of this pathology, there are still few studies that seek to investigate this aspect in different audiences. The objective of the study was to verify the prevalence of IC and the factors that are associated in low income adult women living in a municipality in the interior of northeastern Brazil. It is a cross-sectional study, carried out with 195 adult women, living in the municipality of Santa Cruz, RN. Constipation was diagnosed through Criteria of Rome III. Social conditions, habits and lifestyle, clinical aspects and reproductive history were investigated. The multivariate analysis was conducted using Poisson regression with robust variance, to analyze the relationship between IC and independent variables that presented p <0.20 in the bivariate analyzes. The level of statistical significance of p≤0.05 was considered. The average age of women varied between 25 and 39 years, and the income of the majority was up to 1 minimum wage. The prevalence of IC was 35.4%. The factors that were associated with constipation were the clinical aspects hemorrhoids, pain and burning when evacuating and sexual dysfunction. The variables referring to social conditions, habits and lifestyle, and obstetric aspects were not associated. The present study verified a high prevalence of intestinal constipation among low income women and clinical factors such as hemorrhoids, pain and burning in the bowel movement were associated with this outcome.
