SUMMARY:

The present research aims to investigate inheritance problems involving the manumission of slaves presented by al-Khwarizmi in his algebraic treatise, entitled in Arabic as Kitab al-jabr wa'lmuqabala (Book of Restoration and Balancing, in English). This book was written by the Islamic scholar in the early 9th century, a period marked, in the Islamic empire, by the flourishing of science and philosophy. Several authors such as Bergreen (2003), Puig (2008), Castillo (2009), and Joseph (2010) agree to divide al-Khwarizmi's Algebra, in terms of content, into three parts: the first, which deals with what we now consider equation solving; the second, in which some topics of elementary geometry nature are addressed; and finally, the third, in which various testamentary problems are solved according to inheritance rules imposed by the Islamic law of that period. Noticing, through bibliographic research, that the third part of the algebraic treatise is little explored in academic research, we decided to focus our study on the inheritance problems b brought by the author. This happens, according to Wieleitner (1922), because al-Khwarizmi works, in this section, with very complicated rules provided in Islamic testamentary law, which makes the problems difficult to understand. The copy used for the production of this work was the book "El Libro del Álgebra: Mohammed ibn-Musa al-Jwarizmi", written in 2009 by Ricardo Moreno Castillo. Castillo's book (2009) is a translation into Spanish of Al-Khwarizmi's treatise in Arabic, based on the manuscript held at the University of Oxford. As a theoretical-methodological foundation, some inheritance problems involving the manumission of slaves by al-Khwarizmi were analyzed according to the guidelines offered by the Historical Text Analysis of Mathematics (ATHM), elaborated by Fumikazu Saito and collaborators, and interpreted as cultural production according to the Objectification Theory, elaborated by Luis Radford. The study developed allowed us to defend the thesis that the set of inheritance problems involving the manumission of slaves, brought by al-Khwarizmi in his algebraic treatise, is a cultural production that reflects social, political, religious, and economic concerns of medieval Islamic civilization.
