EDUCATION FOR SUSTAINABILITY IN THE CERRADO BIOME: ARTICULATIONS NECESSARY FOR THE TRAINING
OF TEACHERS WHO TEACH IN MATOPIBA
Educating for a sustainable future, citizen education, conservation
of the cerrado biome, teacher training.
In the geographic delimitation called Matopiba (Maranhão, Tocantins, Piauí and Bahia),
present in the cerrado biome, the socio-environmental problems are aggravated daily with the
unmeasured advance of agribusiness. A high impact due to the deforestation and use of pesticides
has been noticed and disseminated by numerous surveys, showing the degree of destruction of nature,
human life, animal and plant and threatening future generations of families and biodiversity present in the biome.
Several schools are inserted around numerous farms that contribute to this unbridled development, favoring only
the economic growth from the exploitation of cheap labor. However, thinking about the potential of the pillars of
education for sustainability in training teachers, we defend the following thesis: education for sustainability can
foster training processes for teachers in practice, problematizing the catastrophic and unsustainable situation of
the cerrado biome in Matopiba, as well as directing them to rethink their practices, situations of teaching
and reorienting the curriculum in the perspective of the Development Goals Sustainable (SDG). In this sense,
this research proposed to analyze the limits and possibilities of education for sustainability as a perspective
questioning of the cerrado biome in the continuing education of teachers in two school spaces located in
Matopiba, specifically in the city that most deforested in recent years to favor agribusiness.
