SUMMARY:

The research presents a historiographical version about the contributions and/or limitations of a Specialization Course in Science and Mathematics Teaching (EECNM), existing in the IFRN - Campus Macau - Rio Grande do Norte, provided to the continuing education of mathematics teachers of the city of Macau and region. It is centered on the study of the History of Present Time (HTP), and it is justified by the importance of the construction of knowledge about EECNM, identifying its potentialities, weaknesses, collaborating with its improvement and repercussion in the continued formation of Mathematics teachers of the city of Macau and region.  The research problem is: What were the contributions and/or limitations that EECNM provided to the continuing education of mathematics teachers in Macau and its region? The general objective is: to investigate the contributions and/or limitations that EECNM - IFRN/Campus Macau provided to its graduates, Mathematics teachers. We resorted to the assumptions of authors who discuss historicity and oral memory, such as Lapuente (2017); Lohn and Campos (2017); Le Goof (1990); Garnica and Souza (2012), among other sources. Qualitative in nature, we combined distinct methodological procedures to compose the analyzed data, since we used documentary research -written sources- and oral sources, arising from semi-structured interviews conducted with EECNM's former teachers of Mathematics from elementary school, IFRN's teacher who participated in the elaboration of the Course Pedagogical Project (PPC), EECNM's current coordinator, IFRN's Academic Director. Through the oral sources, we analyzed the contents, cross-referenced the data in order to obtain some results listed below: the analyses of the oral sources showed us that EECNM contributed positively to the graduates, in the teaching practice, scientific production and the teaching career, even providing knowledge beyond the specifics of the training, these inherent to their intrapersonal development. All the graduates are currently teachers in their schools, so we can conclude that the contributions of the EECNM have been perceived in the schools of Macau and region. In relation to the limitations, a problem in the course regulation is the order in which the subjects are offered, and the rules for selecting students for the specialization are described in such a way as to create obstacles to the selection process. Another result we noticed was that there was little demand for this specialization in the last calls for applications; this problem is probably due to the fact that the network teachers have already been attended. We believe that this work comprises an important historiographic record of the contributions and limitations of EECNM, IFRN, Macau Campus, the continuing education of mathematics teachers of the city of Macau and region, from its implementation to the present day, pointing to a more comprehensive understanding of its representativeness in the central potiguar region and for Brazilian Mathematics Education.
