THE FIRE IN ÉMILIE DU CHÂTELET: A POST-STRUCTURALIST FEMINIST PERSPECTIVE OF THE HISTORY OF SCIENCES

Historical case studies involving women's participation in the development of scientific knowledge have been emphasized in current research agendas as a way of encouraging a more inclusive and diverse science. The story of the natural philosopher Émilie du Châtelet, a woman of the French high aristocracy, who lived during the first half of the 18th century, and her Dissertation sur la nature et la propagation du Feu (Dissertation on the nature and propagation of Fire), is an example to be further investigated. This period is characterized by Enlightenment thought, in which the philosophical bases were against the participation of women in matters that were not domestic or religious, arguing that they would be incapable of using reason, a natural characteristic attributed only to men. Our search, analysis and historical narrative were guided by the poststructuralist feminist perspective of the Sciences. We related some aspects of the marquise's life and works to gender issues, within that perspective, amidst the marquise's biographical facts and works. The question that guide this research was: how such questions were reflected in your work of Natural Philosophy, in particular, your Dissertation? For this, we appropriate poststructuralist feminist discourses, questioning the notions of representation, the supposedly universal values of a Eurocentric culture of the Enlightenment, in particular the notion of rights that are justified in this philosophy, and bringing a new and controversial perspective to the canonical historiography of science. Émilie follows the current philosophical model and her studies reflect these thoughts and values. The strategy she adopted to be recognized and published is an action in virtue of her sex, since the participation of women in issues involving the use of reason was not accepted. Thus, we understand that both local and temporal gender issues, as well as philosophical methods, influenced her work in the choice, conduct and initially anonymous presentation. Other works, such as her algebraic comments, critiques and reformulations of Newton's Principia also reflect what we understand as a feminine strategy to be read and recognized. This strategy worked for a while, but as we can see in this work, her conquest was suppressed after her death.
