SUMMARY:

The present work is the result of an investigation that had as its object of study the relationship between the work Ex Ludis Rerum Mathematicarum (1450) by Leon Battista Alberti and its cultural context, Renaissance Italy in the 15th century. The work was written as a gift to Prince Meliaduse d'Este of the court of Ferrara in Italy in the face of his supposed appointment as Marquis d'Este. Starting from an old desire expressed by Meliaduse, related to procedures that could be used to measure fields and to control the waters of rivers and streams, Alberti addresses in the work a set of everyday problems involving technical knowledge linked to the manual arts of the time - surveying, cartography, navigation, architecture, etc. - which could be solved, with the help of very simple material resources such as arrows, wax, plummets, pearls, strings and small spheres, using procedures that made use of mathematical concepts, mainly geometric and arithmetic. Throughout the investigation, it was noticed the close connection that the content of Ex Ludis Rerum Mathematicarum has with Alberti's technical treatises, especially with his architectural treatise De re aedificatoria. Assuming the Theory of Objectification as a theoretical and conceptual framework, we start from the principle that the relationship between a work and its context is dialectical, and we define as a general objective to analyze the historical-cultural forms through which the work Ex Ludis Rerum Mathematicarum emerges and at the same time at the same time it expresses and ideologically affirms the conceptual, social, political, and economic structures of its time. The two historical-cultural forms identified and analyzed, which explain the emergence of Ex Ludis Rerum Mathematicarum, are: the process of secularization of society and the new way of approaching the relationship between manual and intellectual work, or between theory and practice. These two forms are closely related and explain the three main ideas that the work expresses: the constitution of a new ideal of ruler, the inclusion of architecture among the liberal arts and the elevation of the social status of the architect.
