AL-RISĀLA AL-MUHĪTĪYYA (1424) - TREATY ON THE CIRCUMFERENCE OF AL-KĀSHĪ: A STUDY IN THE LIGHT OF OBJECTIVATION THEORY
History of Mathematics; Medieval Islamic Mathematics; Objectification Theory
The present research consists of a study of the Circumference Treaty, in the light of the Theory of Objectivation (TO). This medieval Islamic treatise, completed in 1424, was written by the mathematician and astronomer al-Kāshī (1380-1429) during his stay in Samarkanda at the court of ruler Ulugh Beg. The treatise consists of calculating a better approximation for the relationship between the length of the circle and its diameter, since, according to al-Kāshī, the available approximations no longer met the demands of the time. We consider that this historical document has didactic potentialities in the articulation between the history of mathematics and the teaching of mathematics, in this sense, based on the Theory of Objectivation, we developed a historical, social, epistemological and mathematical study of the work in order to point out possible contributions to the teaching.
