SUMMARY:

The present work aimed to study the effect of adding 1.5%, 3.0% and 4.5%, by mass, of TiC, to a WC-10%Fe composite powder, prepared by high energy milling. To prepare the composite powders, a high-energy pulverissete 7 planetary mill was used, with a container and carbide balls, in a humid environment, using 99% ethyl alcohol, under 400 rpm with BPR (ball/powder ratio) of 5:1, a total powder mass of 20 g of the composite powders being milled for 10 hours. The ground powders were compacted at 200 MPa, in a uniaxial 8 mm stainless steel cylindrical matrix, and sintered in a dilatometer at 1300 °C, 1400 °C, 1500 °C and 1600 °C for 1 h, under an argon atmosphere and with a heating rate of 10 °C/min. The characterization of structural, mechanical and magnetic properties was carried out using advanced materials characterization techniques, such as Vibrating Sample Magnetometer (VSM), Granulometry, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), X-Ray Diffractometry (XRD). In the sintered samples, microstructural analysis was performed by optical microscopy, microhardness measurement and density measurement by the Archimedes method. The results show the evolution of the crystalline structure of the powders ground for 10 hours. Powders show plastic deformation and brittle particles (WC, TiC) fracture and tend to refine and weld on the ductile matrix (Fe) base. It is also observed that the grinding time and the variation of the TiC concentration influenced the intensity of the peaks in the X-ray diffractogram, refining the WC and TiC particles, tending to a greater amorphization and homogenization of the particles.
