Presentation

The Graduate Program in Materials Science and Engineering (PPGCEM) began operating in 1998, offering only the doctorate. In 2004, the master’s degree was approved by CAPES and incorporated into the program to meet the specific demand of the first group of Materials Engineers graduated at UFRN. Since its creation, the program acts to ensure the formation of masters and PhDs, meeting the market requirements and the development of high quality scientific and technological research and relevant to the local and national industrial sector.

The program has always worked to contribute to the dissemination of the field of materials, having already run several Minter and Dinter programs for the training of masters and PhDs in the materials area for the nucleation of new Graduate Program in Materials in Brazil. In this sense, the projects developed with IFPI and IFBA that effectively changed the format of these two educational institutions stand out.

The research projects developed by the program focus on the following major themes: Solid oxide fuel cells, catalytic materials, application of waste in ceramic formulations, materials for dental applications, synthesis of magnetic and photoluminescent nanoparticles, metallic and polymeric composites, polymeric blends and materials for the oil industry (cement and mortar).

PPGCEM professors maintain ties and research projects with several research centers in Brazil and abroad, allowing the exchange of researchers and above all of students, both to conduct specific experiments and to attend courses. In recent years, international cooperation has intensified, with a higher number of students abroad, short courses taught by professors from other countries (mainly Europe) and joint publications. Additionally, PPGCEM has received students from different nationalities, a result from established international cooperation.

The Master’s degree and Doctoral degree student in Materials Science and Engineering graduated at UFRN is a professional with a solid basic knowledge and able to play an important social role, and prepared to meet the needs of the new century, capable of working in scientific and technological research and/or teaching of Materials and related fields. A global professional, able to develop strategic research and to work anywhere in the world, with fluency and international penetration. Researchers trained in this Program have a solid knowledge in the field of materials and with the necessary depth to being able to successfully act in their specific area of training, standing out as a lecturer and researcher in Brazil and abroad.
