RESUMO:

The autopolymerizing dental acrylic resin is one of the materials most used in the dental area due to its easy manipulation, its physical properties and its biocompatibility. The commercial product has two components: a powder solid containing pre-polymerised poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) particles and a liquid containing the MMA monomer. Changes in the proportion of powder and liquid can occur, due to the working conditions of the places where the resin is handled, leading to modifications of the physical properties of this material. For this reason, the purpose of this study is to evaluate the changes in the physical properties of the autopolymerizing dental acrylic resin as a function of the proportions of powder and liquid. The materials used were from three manufacturers, identified in this work as AM1, AM2 and AM3, and were used in three different proportions: one recommended by the manufacturer of the material, one with the same concentration of powder and monomer and one with two parts more than than monomer. The materials were characterized by Shore D hardness, Izod impact, porosity, contact angle, biodegradability, water absorption, atomic force microscopy (AFM) and scanning electron microscpy (SEM). The results showed that in the recommended proportion by the manufacturer, the resin AM1 presented the best physical and mechanical properties; while the AM3 resin exhibited better Izod impact properties, low biodegradability and low water absorption. The AM2 resin obtained the best results in the proportion of lower mass concentration, while AM1 e AM3 had lower results than those specified by the manufacturers. In the proportion of higher mass concentration, the resins AM1 and AM2 presented loss of physical and mechanical properties; while AM3 exhibited good porosity, Shore D hardness and wettability properties. Therefore, it is important to follow the recommendations of each manufacturer, as well as to study new concentrations between powder and liquid for better physical and mechanical properties.
